Redrock M2 footage_ portrait/interview

Hi all,

I've posted a test shot of my AC in a lighting setup we did yesterday on project I'm directing for a fortune 100 client.

Overall, I love the look of the Redrock M2: the critical DOF is about 4 inches. I only wish I had more light as we were wide open on the HVX and the 105 Nikon. Next time, I've got to pickup a F1.8 portrait lense or go to HMI lights.

I've posted a raw DVCproHD clip for you to download @:

file is: "HVX_M2_portrait_p2source.mov"

notes:

HVX 200 with CineD/sharpness+2/30P

lense: Nikon 105mm/F2.5 prime lense with redrock M2 adapter
on camera a monitor: marshal 7" LCD

lighting:

Arri1K softbank for key/650 bounced light for fill
Arri 650/softbank for BG with 300 fresnels for highlights.

image as also tweaked in camera and white balance set to warm2.

Can someone convert this to a PC-friendly format? I am just getting a white screen in my Quicktime player.

Thanks

That looks reallly good, can't wait for my HVX.

With the M2 how are you calculating DOF? Can you you use a regular DOF calculator?

105mm? Try getting a 50mm f1.4, its a little more managable. I think. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

How do you monitor your HD footage in post?

i have a 50mm1.4 but that puts me too close to talent and then they are aware of the camera. next time I'll pickup an 80mm 1.8- that should do the trick

I have tested the 85mm and it's still pretty shallow when you get close enough to fill the frame with the subject. I'm not really sure if it's worth the effort to have both the 85mm and the 105mm. It's Pretty darn close.

I have the 50mm and it gets pretty shallow also when you get in close enough to fill the frame. I would definitly rent a lens first to see if you really need it.

I picked up that exact lens. It's a great lens. Bit pricey but worth it. Nikon no longer makes the 105 so get em while you can. Got mine used from B&H but KEH also has a few.

On a side note- Did you have to push the GG box right up against the Diopter thingy to get rid of edge softness. It seems like I must have my GG box flush because the HVX has a macro it seems to work best. When I had the GG pushed back like the tutorials showed it looked wonky. Softness in the center or the edges depending on my focus.

yes, the M2 box needs to be as close to the achromat as possible. Also make sure the GG is not wobbling on the motor- this will cause the footage to pulse out of focus.

Once I got everything dialed in the setup works like a champ- even in a rigorous production environment.
