Was the sound my DVX made when it crashed on the concrete.

Question: it cracked the back near the headphone jack and obviously caused damage in the tape deck area. When I turn the camera on, no problem. Lens is good.

When I put a tape is I get: AUTO OFF -- CYLANDER LOCK. I have yet to get an estimate and want to fix it.

Is it worth fixing, or am I completely screwed??? There is a charge just to look at it and see what's wrong and I'd hate to lose even more money only to be told it's a lost cause.

Ouch. This is the second one I read today. Barry Green (everything dvx) had some good advice for the other guy. Maybe he'll have something to say.

That does not sound promising. Either it needs a trip to the repair center, or you need to bolt a cheap $299 consumer camera underneath it and record via firewire, because it sounds like your tape deck is shot.

Thanks, I'm taking it to a repair center this afternoon. I can't imagine what the estimate is going to be.

It was all due to a faulty tripod.

Can the DVX record straight out through the firewire (to a Firestore or QuickCapture for instance) WITHOUT a tape in the camera? I've recorded to a QuickCapture (.MOV files) but I always had a tape in and recorded to it, too.

Yep. And then there's always the DV Rack option, as well.

Okay. I feel stupid. What's the trick? I've got my external capture unit hooked up through the firewire. No tape in the camera. Camera is on but when I push "RECORD" nothing happens. Am I missing something really obvious?

EDIT: Okay, nevermind. I figured it out. You've got to control the record from the external device NOT the camera. Cool. This will be great for just quick recording where I'm not concerned about a backup. For important stuff I'll still use a tape, too.

EDIT:EDIT: Oooo. And I don't seem to be putting any time on the tapes heads...

Oh no...the other day, I was cleaning my DVX heads with a cheap head cleaning tape, i've always used it though. When I put it in, my cam started making like a "grinding" noise, then it appeared:

AUTO OFF-CYLINDER LOCK

I immediately shut off the cam and ejected the tape, and all my DV tapes have worked fine since then...is something about to happen, or is this a problem I should worry about?

Perhaps that's just a generic term telling you something is up with the tape mechanism. Whether it's and obstruction or bent and cracked (as mine appears to be). I had never seen or heard of that term in my 2+ years using mine.

So now I hear from the repair house: "Please stop calling. We will call you." I was supposed to hear the diagnosis 2 days ago! This is agony!

Ohh....that sucks. I feel for you bud. Good luck with that--might slow down some of your productions.

Yeah, just a bit. Now the question is: is it worth fixing? I've had it for 2 years now and have got plenty of use out of it. It's paid itself off.

The thought of more credit debt makes me sick.
