We know Panny probably planning for Varicam 2 lets tell them what we expect in the camera other then P2 and 2K or 4K . It will be great if Panny listen to DVXUSER for the design of the camera. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
If all things we requested in the camera then we want be abel to discuss about what they dont have in the camera??????????:)

- 35 mm sized bayer sensor with lots of sensitivity and contrast-range
- lots of output options and a high efficient codec (wavelet/jpeg2000)
- optical viewfinder
- free adjustable gamme-curves etc. (not just -8 to +8 stuff, but real curves!) with split-screen comparision on connected monitor or build-in lcd
- very high framerate (120, 180?)
- has to fit in a handbag ;)

WOOOW- i just found out, D5 was first introduced in 1994!!!!!! HOLY SMOKES! i wonder what Panasonic has up their sleave now-a-days!

Well, I was expecting that new HD 2/3" camera at NAB with the 5 P2 slots to be somewhat of a varicam equivalent. (DVCPROHD, some variable framerates like the HVX, higher lattitude like the Varicam, multiple inputs and outputs, the works)
And then on that note I was expecting the Varicam 2 to lean more towards a 35mm replacement than a 16mm replacement like the Varicam was built for.

But now as I see that that new HD cam for NAB is going to be a 1080i only cam meant for news and sports gatherings(a dumb move for Panny if you ask me) I don't have such high hopes for the Varicam 2. :/

I expect 2/3" CCDs, not a 35mm one.
I also expect the obvious upgrades like 720x1280 and 1080x1920 resolutions and then obviously a new codec.

D5 is great, but there are no variable framerates. I hope for a new codec, probably based of jpeg2000

Everyone wants new compression like JPEG2000 or wavelet but does any one know which editing system will support it otherwise again we have to convert.
Apple has H.264 may be they have some editing support in future for that.

H.264 is a GOP-based codec like HDV. It's good for playback, but not for realtime recording or editing.

Remember how the SPX800 started; then a firmware upgrade allowed it 24p.

really? wow!

Well hopefully they'll do a firmware update that allows for 30p, 24p, and all the framerate options that the HVX offers in 720. :)

I'm all for offline file editing. :0

And if your gear can't support a jpeg2000 based codec, then simply go back to using DVCPROHD. It's that simple.
I mean if we're talking about a Varicam 2, then we're probably dealing with a market of people who for the most part will have access to a jpeg2000 compatible system anyways. And those who don't, like I said, use DVCPROHD.

It would be really cool if Panasonic used one large X3 sensor for the Varicam 2, but that technology may be a few years off. Not sure, I know nothing about manufacturing costs.

Mr. Bob Diaz, any thoughts? :)

Varicam 2(K)

Varicam 2(K)

1. 5 p2 card slots
2. integrated laptop harddive storage like the new 200 gb harddrives that are coming out.
3. 2/3 inch HD ccd's
4. of course it should use film lenses.
5. 150mb dvcpro2k 10 bit format and it will kill 35. 100mb will just kill s16.
6. make 2 versions one 2k 10bit 150mb and one 8bit 100mb. Sell the 8bit for 20k:) and the 10bit for $40k with integrated 200gb hardrive (sweet).
7. 3 years come out with Varicam 3 with 300mb version 4k 8 or 10bit. Should still take less space than HDCamSr see http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/hdedit/
It may not even require a raid.
8. kill the dvcpro tape include 2 p2 cards with the varicam(20k)
8. Panasonic kills film R.I.P. 2009

I would expect three 2/3" CMOS sensors, 1080 & 720 and all the features the HVX has and the current VariCam has, and variable codec technology -- at the bare minimum DVCPRO-HD and HD-D5.

Would you also expect a native 1920x1080 chip with a new codec that would allow variable framerates? I hope it does. :0

Also, do you think the single 16:9 35mm sensor would be unlikely at this point? (it would be awesome though)

Not possible. Film will always be a more practical method of storing film quality imagery. Unless of course you're keen on being tethered to refridgerator sized storage units.

1080P 60P true native and SATA connector on the camera with Power so you can transfer the material faster.

I beg to differ.

I beg to differ.

Just cause something was here first doesn't mean it's the best. I really have to argue the practical part, but I will keep it simple. No more dailies to review what you have but instantlies(yeah I made that up). And tethered to a refrigirator storage unit, I know that you are just playing so, I said if they included a 200gb laptop drive which are very small and will store atleast 90minutes at 300mb datarate 3 hours at 150mb. Do film magazines let you shoot that long? How about editing it? Scan everyframe with film scanner$$$ at 2K edit and color correct then back to film. I think it's more practical to eliminate the scanning step.

So shoot 2k, edit, and color correct in 2k then go to film. The practical approach:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

SATA connector good. What would be the fastest way to transfer the material from the camera?
