Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

I still feel the Asian macros do a pretty darn good job considering what they cost. With the proper distances, the aberration can be minimized to a subtle discoloration on the extreme corners that most viewers will not notice unless you shove their nose in it. Re-watch my first videos posted, you really have to look for it. In fact some have been able to avoid it almost completely (though rare).

Sure Dan's comparison shows how bad it can get but people should remember that this project does not use 2 +10 macros stacked like he displayed. It uses 1 58mm +10 turned backwards and a +4 72mm macro as a booster. On my DVX100A the +4 wasn’t mandatory. With the distances I described earlier in this thread, you will be able to zoom past 75% of the aberration, with good results. Snodart's adapter is almost an exact replica, and his stuff looked great.

I just say this because people should not fear having to buy any CO glass. If you have the money for it, it (should) make a great upgrade to anyone’s design. You just pop the 58mm Asian out and wedge the CO in its place. I will doc it later when I get it.

I think reversing the +4 is a good idea, it wont cost anything but a few minutes of your time to see what the results give. Oh, and to answer an earlier question, I ordered the achro/diopter from EVS:

I grabbed these two macros off of ebay since the bids were low. Does anybody know anything about them?

Snodart,

I bought one of the ones pictured in your second picture, except that mine was described as a Zeiss lens, 52mm x 175mm (focal length). Still experimenting with it actually. :D

Give Yourself A Hand!!

Give Yourself A Hand!!

in-case anyone hasn't noticed, this thread has the most posts of any DIY thread on DVX user! In fact, this thread is second only to one HVX thread as having the mosts posts for the entire DVXuser website.

So keep those questions, results, experiments, work-arounds, tips, tricks, tutorials, videos, and general observations coming! :)

Since you've encouraged us to both experiment and keep this thread going, I may as well oblige! Actually, this thread is very addictive and I seem to check it regularly during the day. I've just ordered most of the pieces I needed on eBay (equaling about $80 for all the lens components) and will be picking up the PVC piping today (mmm, better check my checking account).

By the way Ed, finally got to watch your test footage and showed my boss yesterday (who's a huge DIY guy!!) and he loved it. We're trying to make our Public Access Station as experimental as possible and I'm looking at incorporating this type of guerrilla DIY idea into our productions.

Will hopefully get my 35mm adapter (with DVDcase filter) done next week once all the pieces are here and will start shooting! Thanks for encouraging all of this, gang.

Ed,
In my test I used two Asians (a +10 and a +4) stacked together as opposed to two +7 Century and you are right, for experimental work and with proper care, most aberrations can be kept to a minimum especially if you reverse mount them. However, some of the DIY'ers may want to display their work on a larger screen and then the shortcomings will show, but by that time, a replacement would not be as expensive as it may be right now in the experimental phase (and that's what I got them for: experimentation). Once you find the \x{201C}magic formula\x{201D} most likely a replacement with the \x{201C}real thing\x{201D} would be appropriate.
and yes... the flame is spreading FAST... (the interest on this issue) Good work.
I re shoot another test, this time with Asians in reverse. Same +14 on both (10+4 and 7+7). If you want to see it, let me know and I will post it.

I, for one, would love to see such results as I have been contemplating testing just that. If you wouldn't mind posting that I'd really appreciate it.

my apologies Dan, I thought you used two +10 macros. You are right, and I have discovered this just recently: the costs in researching affordable alternatives to achro/diopters can be applied to better glass up front. I guess its the journey and not the destination kind of thing when you a first time DIY.

When using a CO +7, you can subtract the Asians, the Cokin P ring, the empty UV filter, and the related mounting hardware (I will doc soon). You will save close to $50 right there. I cant wait to get my CO glass, I keep checking my order number every 10 min!! Arhhg! EVS PLEASE SHIP THAT SUCKA :)

Oh, why couldn't you have posted that yesterday?!?! :crybaby: That's exactly what I spent on ordering all of those pieces yesterday on eBay!

Btw, what is a CO +7?

LG 35 clip

LG 35 clip

Sorry for the delay. I left town on business for nearly 10 days. Anyway, here's the end result of my kitchen table 35mm adapter. I actually had issues with too much light as the clip will show. Some of the shots are at F8 on the Nikon lens and F-open on the DVX. The DOF is not as dramatic, but I liked the softness. Even on the indoor shots (the bowls of fruit) you'll see my LCD auto iris is knocked down to F2.8. With the Nikon at F1.8 and the DVX F-Open, there was way too much exposure indoors. We ordered the RedRockMicro M2 which should be here in a couple of weeks. It will be interesting to do a side by side comparison. I'm convinced that the static ground glass is very limiting. But, with that said, these DIY units are amazing, versitile and fun. My LG 35 could benefit greatly from some support rods, a follow focus and a better camera operator (me being the inept one in these shots). Good luck to all of you and thanks for sharing your findings.

LittleGiant - Any way you could possibly list what parts you used? Mainly what parts you used to space the ground glass in between the lens and the macro.

From the +10 ( the DVX end) I'm just using some random 52mm rings with the glass taken out. The total length is 36mm. One UV lens ring 5mm in length, one Macro type lens 10mm long and the last one was from a Nikon tele extension kit that's 21mm long. You could accomplish the same thing by stacking any number of rings. The most critical distance, I found, is actually from the Focus screen to the lense. That length is 45mm and I used a couple of macros with the glass removed and another one of those Nikon Tele adapters. There's a group www.camera-depot.com that can make extension tubes of any length for around $20 each. I'm not making anything for production, so I didn't go that route. You should just start stacking rings until you get the sucker in focus.

No no- you still will need those parts when making this adapter, you're fine. IF you choose to someday buy a CO +7 to replace the Asian macros (CO+7=Century Optics Achromatic Diopter +7) than you wont need the parts. Don't cancel your parts and jump out to buy a $250 piece of CO glass instead!

I dont even know if a CO+7 will be strong enough to work based on my current setup (currently the Asians provide +14) thats half as large so it may not work. :(

Like I said in the earlier post, those building this adapter for the first time should still use the Asian macros until I know if the CO will work or not. I probably should have kept quiet until I had a confirmation. Or just wait until we have confirmed results.

FYI: and for a Canon FD mount the distance is 43mm
