What´s better : recording in

Spartacus

Veteran
dv50 native or dv100 and downconverting afterwards...?
Anyone tried that out yet?
I think SD doesn´t seem to be a major issue for most HVX buyers so far, but maybe someone is curious too and does some tests...

Thanks Barry,
considering the amount of your daily answers here, you kept it short and simple I guess...
Maybe someone with more time at hand could elaborate on this a litle bit more?
I read that redgiant´s instantHD software proposes upconverting SD footage to HD for CC and than scaling back down again, to get optimal results, so I thought recording in dv100, doing all the postwork and than converting down to SD would maybe be a good choice...
Or doesn´t it matter, because both dv50 and 100 use 4:2:2 colorspace
and because their´s less compression with dv50...?

I shot it, I tried it, and DV50 looks better than downrezzed HD. So I don't know how much more explanation needs to be made; it just looks better. Half the compression helps too.

btw dvcpro 50 equals digital betacam! This camera rocks even in SD!

That's the reason I've jumped to the HVX. ONE CAMERA for whatever jobs come in.
Over the next 2 years, we'll still be shooting both SD and HD. being able to shoot DV Tape, DVCPro50 and HD with one camera is remarkable!!!!!

Thanks for the tip on shooting DVCPro50 instead of downconverting. That has been a pain in the arse for daily production.

Although, one selling point to our customers is shooting in HD today will futureproof thier footage later. We often re-post spots from footage from years ago.

I agree with Barry completely. And the DV50 stuff looks awesome --- almost worth the price of the HVX all by itself!

You wouldn´t have any examples of DV50 footage?
Been asking for this for a while...
