720P 50 support for FCP petition

Since the 720p 50 support hasn't been announced yet, and the PAL camera has already been launched, it seems that Apple needs to know that there's a very big potential market for its FCP product in HVX PAL users. Therefore, I would suggest everyone with a PAL camera (or planning to buy one) to send a message requesting this compatibility to

The more requests people send, the more they see we need it! :)

Done. I hope they get their fingers out and we have an update in the next couple of days. Can't be that difficult for them, can it?

I just checked Panasonic Broadcast Europe's forums, and they FINALLY updated. Seems like there will be a major update on the HVX section on the site, with many questions (codec resolution and even FCP integration), on, you guessed it, April 1st. (What's with all these announcements in April fools day? Who will take them seriously?)

I seriously think the new universal package of FCP will include the 720p50 codec (since it also seems to be aimed at being introduced on April 1st...)

It might be helpful if the HVX community got together to come up with more useful integration for our camera. Here was my feedback to Apple:

If you aren't going to include 720p25N support in the universal version of FCP, I hope you'll create an upgrade very soon after.

Metadata preparation (via mounted SD cards) and importation (via MXF) would be great too. Getting Cinema Tools to turn P2 cards' 'edge numbers' into stock for film production would help workflow. 'Prepare P2 card...'

I called Apple UK this morning about FCP 720p 50 support and the techy guy said there was no plans to add this feature and also that the HVX200 was an unsupported camera - hope theyve got their facts wrong over there in Ireland since Ive got the upgrade on order!

Well, that'll give Panasonic UK red faces because they're booked to appear at the UK Final Cut Pro User Group on April 6th in Birmingham. Here's a quote from a recent mailing from them:

This time the UKFCUG will meet in Birmingham, on the 6th of April. The big
news is Panasonic will be there to show off its affordable DVCPro HD camera,
the HVX200 with a live demo of P2 with FCP.

So I assume a tech working for Apple in the UK might not be up to speed on coming events. I imagine they are responsible for supporting 10 different applications, using a FAQ a few months old from Apple in the US.

This could be a sign of future 720p50 support, HcBeck... Wouldn't make sense for Panasonic to bring the Ntsc camera now that the PAL one has been released...

This is more like a bump. It is just to keep fellow PAL users informed by this and keep those feedback sheets flowing to Apple! If they see huge demand, they will most certainly add 720p 50 compatibility!

Final Cut Universal doesn't have 720p 50 support. Is there any possibility that Apple could introduce a Final Cut Update, like 5.1.1, or 5.5 (Not unlike the transition from Final Cut Pro 4 to 4.5), to support PAL 720p 50?

Anyway, this just means that the "fight"continues! Keep sending them feedback! :)

Any possibility? Of course there's possibility! Keep nagging them. Remember they just released 5.0.4 three months ago, so 5.1.1 is not unreasonable. I think everyone's pretty much expecting a hefty update next month at NAB, whether to 5.5 or 6.0 we don't know, but we all expect it. So nag nag nag them to make sure that the 50p and 25p support are included in that next update.

I'm not very optimistic that apple will have any updates for Europeans at NAB. They are so US-centric...

This is very frustrating to me, I have a production to shoot after two weeks from now, cameras seems to be available, but our mac-only post-house can't edit the stuff.
As usual apple does not talk about future releases...

The only thing we can do is keep sending feedback, Toke. If they see thousands and thousands of posts, they'll have to consider. they included 1440X1080, and that's a start. We're actually at the reverse of what americans had to cope with: They had full 720p support, bugt no 24p at 1080. We have 25p at 1080, but no 720p support. I believe the 1080p24 in the US was implemented by lobbying and pressure from US clients and of course Product Manager Jan Crittenden. We need Panasonic Europe, Asia, Heck, all Panasonic Pal representatives to pressure Apple to do integrate the 720p 50 codec. Jan, are you listening? Please help us out! We know you can work this out (with your presentations with Apple and joint announcements :) )

Yep, SPZ,
I did send feedback to apple.
And AFAIK dvcprohd1080i50 support has been in fcp quite some time.
Not 1080p25 though...
