Playing with Myself...& my (Letus35 Flip)

I saw on the GO-35 post that they were going to do a shoot off for 35mm adapters.Where can I find the thread where the adapters compete? Does anyone know?

I want to know the same!!!! Let's face it--all of us have the hots for these DOF adapters and all of us want to know have they compare.

I myself would definitely pay a reasonable increase in price for a flip configuration, as I really don't want to have to deal with magnets and backwards imaging and no information on the lcd since the camera is being tricked into thinking the lcd is flipped.

Anyone who knows about this shoot off or for some reason has had a chance to see more than one of these in action....let the rest of us know!!!!!!!!

The shootout should be posted up this week, Norm says its completed, just waiting for Jarred to approve and post it up.

I would like to see the shootout with the Letus35 Filip, Mpic & Mini35.
Same Lens, Same Shot, Same everything "but" adapter!

I'm going Lens shopping tomorrow. More posts to come.

One More Thing...DOF aside, I really see the filmic advantage
of these adapters. When I shoot the same exact scene without the adapter,
the DOF is not giving it that 35mm almost animated look, it's the Lens.
Not saying DOF isn't important, but it's the Lens that gives it that soft unreal
look. Maybe it's just me, I dunna know.
Thanks,
Adrian

Great footage and editing! Wow! Can't wait for my SG35!

But, hey - give yourself some credit - it's not the equipment that makes something this good! It's the vision!

adrian you're right on about the lens. there are a couple factors other than 24p and DOF which contribute to the feel of 35mm film. the lens is one. now if only we can figure out some kind of DIY stutter-reducer! using the dvx, the main gripe i have (which i still don't hear a lot of people complaining about) is not the DOF but the image stutter when objects move quickly in the shot. this is NOT something you see in film and it's a dead giveaway. i haven't had the camera that long but i've heard from some people that shooting in 24p advanced helps with this issue a little bit. i think the woman who shot "november" with courtney cox said she used 24pa; the stutter was there but not as bad.

You are preaching to the choir here. My main gripe is the "reality show" look
that the DVX gets out of the box in 24p. The Lens adapter definitely helps with this
issue. As far as 24pa mode helping with "strobing", I haven't noticed any
difference. Chromatic abberation is also another silent killer. It sneaks up on
you when you least expect, or are not looking for it, especially with this adapter
when using it in bright outside conditions. I'm also going to test the
+7 detail & +7 coring, etc... listed in another Letus35 thread. Seems to
add sharpness & takes away some noice of the out of focus background.
Overall, I Love the Adapter. It's not Film, but it sure beats 60i all day long.

Does Panasonic have any plans to make this easier on us and release their own factory tested 35mm adapter. One that has minimal chromatic abberation and get good depth of field in low-light conditions.

They could rack up if they did that and sold one for HVX too. It would eliminate so much of the confusion around these items. I was glad to see that the Letus and SG35 participated in the shootoff. For me this sealed the deal. I am not going with M2 or any other adapter that didn't want to participate. Why not have a third party review it? As in any case thanks to both Letus and SG35. Who cares what the problems might be with these different adapters? I say buy both and use each one for the appropriate situation. It will still be a lot cheaper than the P+S technic.

In my personal experience with 35mm adapters,
chromatic abberation is the biggest hurdle. This is
followed by light loss as a close second. Thridly & finally,
depended on what lens you use, VERY short focal length.
With a 50mm 1.4, you lose about 4+ stops in low light.
Outside it's fine...& about a 15-20' focal range at best.
Chromatic abberation sneaks up on you! It's usually during
post that you "first" notice it. By then it's too late.
But I wouldn't go back to just stock DVX if you paid me.
It makes that BIG a differnce.
Just my 2 cents,
Adrian

bugs i have to disagree. i say buy neither the letus nor the sg. at least from the shoot-out, it's clear they both have huge drawbacks. all these adapters are making all our mouths' water but i think i'm going to wait until the chroma abberation has been fine tuned, along with a few other crucial issues. most of the footage from these early adapters just looks to much like flashback scenes in a lifetime movie. another thing i really am not crazy about is the vibrating GG. i like good audio, like anyone who wants pro footage from their camera. in the shoot-out between the letus and sg, they tell us you can hear the vibrating from the sg35 TEN FEET AWAY. and the footage from the sg was way too soft and "waxy" for me. affordable, yes. acceptable....i say, no. i mention this in edweirdo's thread and i have to point out, i have seen a lot of footage from all the adapters out there, and this clip with the m2 from redrock just blew me away http://www.redrockmicro.com/footage/DVX100A/the_letter_full_size_plus.mov

maybe it's just me, but i'd rather pay a thousand bucks for a really good adapter than 300-500 for one that's so-so and put a frown on my face in post.

in any case i can't wait for more shoot-outs!!

Crisp or Soft?

Crisp or Soft?

Some have stated the footage as being soft; some say it's crisp. So which is it? Based on what I've seen of footage with DOF adapters, this is actually kind of crisp... Or is it possible for the image to be both of these things?

And nice video by the way! Something about the music makes it feel Spielberg-ish or Disney-ish.

Thanks Gordon...
I would say the footage has a "softness" about it. But it is a
desired "softness". The stock DVX footage is a little DIGITAL for
my taste. Anyone who says it's too soft need only compare it to
most any 35mm movie in their collection. I think a better way to describe
what the adapter achieves would be "sheen". Call it soft, flat, crisp
or whatever...I Like It A Lot!

Great Idea! Well executed.

I was looking for Cory as the umpire or the bat catcher though.

Nice DOF at the start on the credits.

Adrian that was very entertaining, nice work man.

Have to disagree with you here, but I see it all the time. Strobing is part and parcel of shooting 24fps, however they usually use tricks and pans within its limits to reduce it considerably. These can also be applied to shooting with a DVX. I also think a lot of the soft focus (not all) is due to using dof in a manner that we are not used to, I often see 35mm adapter shots when the focus is held out to long, the focus is not on the subject/s, or just not correctly focused on the object. Its not an easy thing to do without a monitor.

i really disagree ncje. perhaps i worded my feelings incorrectly the first time. if you compare interlaced video and film, yes, there is strobing in film. but there is a feel to the strobing in 24p 1/3" CCD cams that is distinctly 'digital' and to me is a huge give-away. look at some footage of lets say panasonic's SDX-900, which has 2/3" CCD, and the stutter of objects' sharp movements has a much more organic, film-like feel.

as far as your soft focus comments, you're right on the money. let me ask you thoug, do you think one of those 6" LCD monitors would do the job?

Agree with you there, though if you make sure you pan with subjects at same speeds, and use the pan speed rules that apply to 24fps film its virtually unoticable.

yes but unfortunately you cannot pan with every object moving in every shot...look at the best of shorts, movies, etc, shot with the dvx ('november' is one of the best ones visually) and you'll see this digital strobing everywhere.

we just need to come to terms with the facts---the dvx, xl2, and, yes, even the hvx, xl-h1, hd100----these are all 1/3" CCD cameras and are significantly inferior to all 2/3" CCD 24p cameras in every respect.
now that panasonic has dropped the price of the sdx900 to $16k, i just cannot justify buying an xl-h1-----a respectable 24p hd camera with interchangeable lenses----for about $10k!! you'd have to be either uninformed, and obsessed with the notion of hd, or, simply be truly in need for shooting hd, to shell out this kind of cash. the sdx is indeed standard def, but still leaps and bounds ahead of all these 1/3" CCD cams.....i am not a technical wizard yet but just take some time comparing footage.

however a decent 35mm adapter is definitely a huge step in making 1/3" CCDs look much more film-like!!
