I give up - need help selecting mic

Yankee,

There was an ad recently on Craig's List here for someone looking for sound...of course with their own equipment. The author of the ad said:

"I can't afford to pay for sound because all of my money is going into production so we can get into festivals". I almost fell out of my chair when I read this ad. I wrote the fool back and asked him when he determined that sound wasn't a part of production. (Of course he didn't write me back...I'm sure I'm not the only one that slammed him). I also did let him know that without good sound, he had little chance of getting into any of the mainstream festivals...maybe he'd get lucky and the Des Moines International Film Fest would pick him up...and a trip to Des Moines is about what he deserved. (No offense meant to those in Iowa, but I did spend two weeks in Des Moines one summer, and I truly would not wish that on my worst enemy.)

;-)

All sorts of variance in picture quality can be accepted as "just another style" and professional (e.g. blown out backgrounds, shaky cam, etc.), but nothing screams amateur (and turns the viewer off) like unintelligible audio.

I saw your link for that at RAMPS. The link for the Seattle gig by Charles demaning experience and no-pay was equally as funny/painful. I have actually seen the trifecta where you have to have experience, own equipment, and work for no pay...the big brass ones some people have.

I am starting to compile a list of these guys so I know to not take work from them in the future, or at least not waver one dollar in my dayrate.

Cheers

Dude, don't get me started....and believe me I could rant all day on that topic.

If it was just the not-ready-for-primetime players that did this I would be happy but even serious long time professionals are often guilty of this sin. A producer that has been burned enough before is the sound guys best friend.

Best

....man, I have to get back to work but you truly have me wanting to start my rant. :(

Rant brother, rant.

I'm still amazed that we don't just answer: hire someone for every single 'what mic should I buy question.
