Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

What exactly do you mean by an AOL CD case? Is this just a milky white plastic? Any other comparable examples? I'd like to try this just to test my setup and to verify what I had been talking about above with removing the macros. The screen I have right now is rather small, but I think if I had something big enough to cover the entire 55mm then I'd be set. Thanks for the help Marlene. Excellent examples.

It's the case that well....almost looks like a wax screen, even the same opacity. It's not milky white and not frosted either, just kinda waxy looking. It's the oversize case that looks like the kind from the rental stores. It's thick and stiff but still cuts with sizzors and you can custom fit it to your tube size. A perfect substitute for the real thing when checking focal length and maybe even for using but I haven't tried burning a DVD and playing on my widescreen tv, I'm thinking that I may notice things that I haven't on the computer monitor.

If you can't find then pm me with your address and I'll send you a piece.

pretty impressive from something that I throw out in the trash! Very similar to the salad cup/beer cup frosted plastic, I would not have thought it would look that good but of course with all experiments, the real test is on the big screen.

Have you looked at any of this footage on an NTSC monitor/ or TV?

WOW! that's great Marlene. If you do see grain just wait till some one throws out their old PC, snag the fans out and mount that AOL stuff to it and Bang! Moving adapter.

The beer cup seems fine when you hold it up to the eye, kind of. I tried it on a very poorly made adapter, and I can tell that the Bokeh is like way weird. Sorry.

OMG......After reading the above from Ed, I decided I'd go ahead and burn a DVD just to see. I was sure it would look like poo poo.....but......it looks pretty darn good. Enough so that I'm going to pull this out of my test adapter and into a keeper. First I checked it out on my CRT TV in the bedroom....great.... then the real test on the large screen HD LCD widescreen in the living room......I was not expecting what I saw. Only slight grain, no aberations and very sharp!

So this weekend I will do a shootout comparison with my Nikon Type D screen. I tossed my wax screen (really shouldn't have done that just because of a slight hotspot) so I will have to wait until I get another good one to add to the comparison.

Be on the lookout for those AOL CD cases. I had 6 of them in my office (I just keep them in case I need the case for something) and only 2 of them were scratch and/or defect free. When you hold them in the light just right you will see a slight swrilling but it's not coming through in the adapter.

Please don't ask me to send you any pieces. I'm sending some off to 2 people who've already asked but then I'm going to be out. I know a mail person and I'll ask if she can get me some.......if so......I'll let you all know. Also, let's wait for the comparison between the AOL Case and the Nikon Type D screen. I will do that this weekend.

That good huh? Well, we all await your comparison! :) BTW Marlene, are you using any kind of condenser?

(can you imagine going from bidding wars on ebay for the D screen to people fighting over AOL cases) I shudder!

Yep......that's it Ed. I'm not using a condenser. I do have one but don't think I need it. Gonna do the comparison either today or tomorrow and I'll put it on DVD for bigscreen review before posting results.

It's called "flexbox" and mine has the following URL on it;

http://www.carthuplas.be

But looking at it with a lens it seems too transparent, i'll hook it up to my adapter when i get some time...

That doesn't look like the same thing in your link, but the above link is the right one and it's not too transparent.....which one are you talking about?

What bout the TDK Mini DV case? they're actually very similar to those DVD cases. What I'd like to know is, what do you use to cut the DVD case and get it to the right size? Marlene, btw, your footage looked beautiful, which is why I'd love to know how to make my adapter based on yours...
(sorry, Edweirdo, I could never watch your footage...)

Edweirdo,
Looks like I can finally see your footage. Earlier in the week, was your site down, because that's when I was trying. Great site by the way (from one rabbit to another).

I actually just bought a pack of those too and thought they seemed too transparent to work. I'll pop one in my adapter and try it out though. I think the AOL cases are more opaque. I'll let you know.

Edit: Yeah, they won't work. I just tried it out. It doesn't 'catch' the image like a groundglass or focusing screen does. You can see the image but you get no depth of field changes.

Ok......here's the comparison footage
http://homepage.mac.com/marlene.mac/iMovieTheater15.html

Note that I did not move the camera, I just switched adapters. I left all settings untouched.

I looked at it on DVD on the bigscreen and other than a difference in the amount of background blur between the two......the AOL CD Case had sharper corners. I have to say that I like the CD Case and I'm going to keep it.

Now on to the Wax.

I liked the tutorial footage that Moochy posted earlier this week. I think I will do the same and would like to encourage others to also post video tuts. I will try and do that this weekend and I'll create a new thread for it when I do.

I'm sorry that you never got to watch Ed's footage.....it's great, and over other adapter footage I saw it was Ed's that inspired me to create my own adapter with modifications from his design.

The case cuts with scissors.
