HVX (HD and DVCPro50) to Beta transfer.

The only deck I have access to for final output is a miniDV deck. In working with the DVX, I would always send my final product on a miniDV cassette for transfer to Beta (in my limited experience, it's always been the local TV station that makes the transer). So, what do I do now? Will transfer places and TV stations take a "self-contained" FCP file for Beta transfer? Any thoughts? Perhaps someone in the So. Cal. area who does this could become the unofficial HVXUser HD transfer house?

thats a great question...i'd also like to know what alternatives that are out there. theres a telecine post house in the norcal area that's experimenting with a virtual vtr...

they said they would upload my uncompressed quicktime off a hard drive to the virtual vtr and then they could color it on a Da Vinci if necessary and lay it off to HD tapestock or down convert to SD for DigiBeta or DVCAM.

i dont know if that helps at all...

If your project is not too long, you can send it back to the P2 cards on the camera and then playback from the camera, and use the Betacam's inputs to get the component image (I presume)

AFAIK BetaSP cannot even handle 16:9. It is a 4:3 format. So here the troubles start. You will need to make a letterboxed 4:3 programme or have a hardwaretool in between that does it on the fly while recording to BetaSP. DigiBeta can record 16:9, so that should work much better. Going with the component I/O is probably the best yes.

Can we route the video from the computer to the HVX via firewire, then from the HVX to the monitor via component input?

I remember being able to watch footage during editing, routing the video from computer to Sony DV camera via firewire, then from Dv camera to monitor via supervhs input.

The point is, I didn't have to actually copy the computer footage to tape before I could play the footage on monitor.

I was using Premirere at the time... don't know if this is a unique feature of Premiere.

I think it can export to "tape" (which means exporting back to P2 in HVX land), but can't stream realtime while editing. I heard reports from people getting a frame on the monitor, but no playback. Anyone can clear this up? Can you view CC results in this frame without having to purchase a Kona LH card?

This has been my solution for Broadcast as antiquated Beta SP is the standard.

Saves money on a Capture Card/Output Card.

But it only works for me as I do 30 sec or 1 min commercials...

You can do frame analysis through the HVX but CANNOT do playout. The camera will not allow it. You can do analysis for CC through stills, but unfortunately that is it.

I use my 2nd Cinema Display for monitoring the frame, Still out for CC and then P2 to Beta SP for output.

That will come as a big shock to all the people who spent over $20,000 for their
DXC-D50WSH's. :)

Do you lose quality by using the component outputs? I mean, obviously your losing quality if you're taking your HD down to Beta, but what about the signal quality of the component outputs in general?

Maybe I get you wrong ( the Q.) but you can store 16:9 on beta sp, it is ´compressed within the 4:3´ and you need to bring it back in the 16:9 domain. You can do that with hard or software. Than you have video 16:9 shown on widescreen tv sets or with black above and under on 4:3 tv sets.

What about the audio?
If you dump to P2 will the audio go out the RCA jacks?
Where was that post where Barry explained how to get
from FCP back into P2?
Thanks
