Error While Trying To Play Tape/ Tc Issue?/ Flashing Red Cross during Shooting

This weekend I had a problem during shooting (30P/ ntsc/ low light conditions/ sometimes added 12 db gain) On the display showed up a flashing red cross which I guess stays for TC reading problems. Further I had big problems to watch my taped footage. There were horizontal stripes all over the screen and I saw 2 pictures of my footage at the same time (horizontal stripes over the display make it look like sliced footage). When I play-forwarded while watching everything was just blue.

Now if I put my tape in my little canon camera there is no problems to
watch the footage. When I put it in my panasonic / tape mode/ I can see the
picture that is usually captured if the cam is on rec. and that is mixed with the footage that's on the recorded tape . both pictures are appearing mixed in little stripes acroos the screen. again the same problem...looks like sliced into many stripes. every second stripe it changes between different pictures.

I don't really know what's the problem but I guess it has to do with the cameras record and playhead. it seems very serious?! if anybody knows what kind of error is happening... please let me know.

thanks,

The red "x" is a head clog error. It sounds like your playback heads are clogged. The best thing for you to do now is to run a Panasonic brand cleaning tape through the camera for about 10 seconds. If the problem still persists, you will need to have them wet cleaned.

Just a quick question concerning this...

I got my DVX100b a couple weeks ago and during my first major shoot with the camera (near a lake) the red x popped up. I found this strange as the camera is new. I was doing a challenge and didn't have time to go get a cleaning tape and run it through, so I turned it off and turned it back on and through the course of the day the little red x didn't show up again. Should I clean my tape heads or maybe something from the atmosphere by the lake was interfering with it? I know it's bad to clean your tape heads too much and there's not even 5 hours on the heads.

Just wondering if there's anything I should be worried about.

Yes clean the tape heads. I don't have confirmation on this, but I figure there's likely some manufacturing residue or lubricant or something on the brand-new heads. I've seen this report from multiple DVX users and HD100 users and other camera users. Seems like a good idea to clean the heads before your first recording.

Thanks a lot Barry. I didn't think of that, but now that I do it makes sense. I have a cleaning tape for my PVGS120 but I'll pick up one for my DVX just in case. I don't remember how many times I've used the old one.

I also had the red x show up after only a couple of head hours. I ran a cleaning tape and I haven't seen it since. Barry's theory is most likely spot on (as usual).

Yeah, same thing happened to me with less than 3 hours on the cam. I ran a cleaning tape through (Panasonic of course) and I've never seen it since.

Same thing happened to me during shooting my sci-fest short. Had about 400+ hours on the camera... I was expecting it to happen sooner than it did. I run a cleaning tape through it every 20 hours or so... Haven't had a problem since.
