So for editing HVX footage, I prefer FCP to Vegas or Avid by an order of about 10,000 to one. FCP's performance with HVX footage is just amazing, the others don't compare . . . Two frames per second (Avid) vs. multiple streams of full-screen full-frame full-rez full frame rate realtime including transitions between 'em. No brainer there. At least, that was my experience.

Would you please have a look at this thread regarding HVX footage being edited on Avid vs. FCP? I'm hoping you can clear some of this up in this thread AND on that one.

Thanks,

I need to know what the system set up. The last time I responded to a Barry support question he was running on a non qualified OS.

Yes it was a non-qualified OS, that's true. System specs were Pentium M 760 on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop, running Windows XP Media Center edition, 1GB of RAM.

Honestly, Barry, that could be the problem right there. Avid is super picky about its operating environment. So that might explain the extremely poor performance you got trying to edit HVX footage on Avid.

Avid sucks. No system should have to have you require such a specific setup to work. Not in this day and age. Maybe broad system requirements like "Open GL video card that supports pixel shaders" or 2G ram recommended, but a stock XP, with half decent card and memory should work. I've always hated Avid for this reason. They need to get into the 2000's. In fact, they need to get into the 90's.

Editing HVX footage using FCP seems just as limited in the specifics if you think about it. It isn't like you can just go scrounge up parts to build a G5 (or any Mac). There are thousands upon thousands of possible PC configurations out there... not so much for Mac. For Avid to publish specific system requirements for functionality on a PC platform doesn't seem outlandish.

That said, I've cut on Avid for a few years now, and never on an "approved" system.

Hi,

I don´t have any special Hardware, just a self made P4 3.0 on Asus MB, 2 Gig Ram and a simple Geforce 5900 XT Card and it works without bigger problems.

If I had the money, I would go for a certified Workstation - it´s the same way, Apple does it´s business, or not ?
How should Avid ensure it´s support for all the self made PC´s out there ?
The Software works on other PC´s too, but it works better on a certified system because they´ve tested it.

I don´t think Avid sucks, but hopefully they make some things better with an upcomming Update (maybe at NAB).

Could be. But I didn't know that was going to be a problem when I got the laptop; I got it months before I got Avid. And I don't really feel like buying a second OS and reformatting the entire system just to run one program, so I just won't use Avid on this system anymore.

Understandable . . .
