Stabilizers: What is your favorite?

what stabilizers work best out there? would one be more suited to working in the snow? do any of them just suck?

we're talking "professionally made" here (no DIY)

i'm looking at the Merlin or the VZ Ultralight for shooting mostly snowboarding and skateboarding any thoughts/experiences?

"In the snow" ?
What type of shooting are we talking here? The shooter on foot, or on skies?

Using a Steadicam (or similar stabilizer) on things that regularly crash (yes this means winter sports) can be very risky. They require a certain amount of balance, which normally doesn't match the balance required to ski/board.

That beaing said, you will want teh lightest rig possible, but it will also need to be prety strong.

The first question when buying a rig: What camera and accasories do you want to put on it? This will define your choices that you can then pick from.

i will be snowboarding with it...i will be using a dvx100b with a cover on it and at the most a .6 or .7 wide-angle attatched to it...perhaps a shotgun mic on occasion (won't need a wide angle most of the time)

is the VZ Utlralight too small for this??

That's going to be har don any stabilizer. There's a lot of forces involved. And all that kit is goign to get heavy too.

For somthing like this I'd actually recomend a Fig-rig type rig instead of a proper gimbled stabilizer. It will just be stronger, still give you ok results, as you will hopefully be boarding on a fairly smooth run anyway. A Fig-Rig will also actually offer your camera some protection if you do slam, which i'd put as one of it's higher meris for this situation.

Whatever you do, be carefull!

yea...for what i lack in camera skills i have been able to make up in snowboarding skills...every fall i've taken with a camera so far ive been able to keep it off the snow...

what does the figrig do for stabilizing? is there even an articulation point on it or is it just basically a big handle??

It's just a big handle. But it will help you aim the camera steadier yourself. Not as good as something on a gimble but probably more suited for this sort of shooting.
