PCMIA card to 3.5 Hard drive

No, it won't work, if you are talking about a P2 Store replacement. It doesn't have the "brains" that the P2 Store has. It is just a standard external drive. You can connect this drive to your PCMCIA slot on your laptop, but that doesn't mean that you can put PC cards into this drive.

Also, I don't know for sure, but it doesn't appear to have a PCMCIA slot on the drive itself. I believe it uses a cable to go from a port (perhaps proprietary) on the hard drive to a PCMCIA port on your laptop.

If it actually had a PCMCIA slot in the hard drive, I am sure they would market this as a way to add PCMCIA cards to your laptop using a USB connection. But, they don't, so thats why I don't think there is a PCMCIA slot on the hard drive, and therefore it wouldn't work. You could however use this hard drive with the HVX200 while in "Host Mode", but there is nothing special about that since any external hard drive can do that.

Good looking out though. Eventually we'll find a solution. :)

I don't think you really know. Who is to say that the P2 cards aren't just 100% standard PCMCIA storage devices? Laptops recognize them as such, so who is to say with any amount of certainty that the HVX is doing some kind of proprietary and different voodoo to talk to them?

Actually laptops don't recocnize P2 cards, they need a special driver from Panasonic.
And that's because it's not a plain harddrive protocol.

Also P2 cards are Cardbus devices not PCMCIA devices.Although they share the same mecanical connector are NOT backwards compatible with PCMCIA devices.
This drive is a PCMCIA device, which can be used in a PCMCIA slot or a Cardbus slot as some Cardbus slots can read PCMCIA devices. But the P2 system is 100% Cardbus so a PCMCIA card wont work.

PCMCIA is an oldscool 16 bit portable interface.
CardBus is a fullblown PCI bus.

Specialized Communications, that's who. They've spent months decoding and engineering their own P2 replacement for their CinePorter, and they've found out that there's all sorts of processing and communications going on inside the card.

Besides, we've tried PCMCIA memory adapters and they just don't work.
