Master Ped and Detail Coring

I read in the manual that detail coring can help to eliminate noise. Is this something that I should use, and if so, what should I set it to?

How about master ped? What exactly does it do? It seems to deepen the blacks, while creating less detail in the darker regions. Is it good to set the master ped to, say, -5 to help eliminate noise?

BTW -- I'm not having an issue with noise, I'm just trying to learn.

Coring can help minimize noise, at the expense of high-frequency detail. But it depends on your overall detail level -- if you have your detail level set to +7, coring will have its greatest effect. If you have your detail level set to -7, coring won't do anything for you.

The master ped controls the black level and can act like a contrast control -- setting it negative lowers the black level and can make for some stark contrast; raising it positive raises the black level and washes out your contrast. If you have noise in the shadows, setting the master ped lower can help crush that out, but you'll lose shadow detail when you do it.
