From today our short new movie Scripted Work is available online for watching (the trailer has been shown before on this forum). It's an 18 minutes surrealistic drama project, partly based on a story of the Dutch writer Lodewijk Wiener.

Synopsis:
A writer roams around a library. He’s sampling the atmosphere for a story that unfolds there. He meets a young woman who confronts him with her obsession. Before he knows it, he loses his grip on reality.

Technical:
It's shot with the DVX100 (PAL) and edited with Vegas 6. The download version is a 160 MB Quicktime 6 file. The language is Dutch, but the film contains English subtitles.

Hi guys,

No reviews so far? No zombies or sf in this project, but still worth having a look and say something sweet about it I think. It's a project I worked on for almost a year, and a story that's been haunting me for 20 years.
Looking forward fellows, thanx!

Due to the subtitles I wanted to have a proper sized videoformat. Part of the film is really about the dialog and a good readable subtitling is necessary.
Is (A)DSL or cableinternet not very common at the computer of the average DVXUSER member?

hi peter. i think i saw your film a couple of months ago..and liked it. is there anything different about this version?

Peter,

That was very well done, very engaging and a really good story. The acting was excellent. Some of the editing could be tightened up but, other than that, I was very impressed. Cinematography was very nice. :)

Thanks for sharing.

that was good. i really liked it.
can you give us some insight on the film/ maybe talk about your year in production??
thanks.

Thanks for having a look and receiving feedback.

@ Korova:
It's the same movie, it's now in public available while earlier it was only for people who send a PM, mainly due to bandwidth reasons. The website got a bigger bandwidth recently.

@ Zac:
I never saw any Fellini movie, there is one dvd of this director waiting in my collection I still have to watch. So after that, I might know more what you're talking about!

@ Loo:
The biggest time got into the script. The original short story has a different plot, it's very open ended without a dramatic build-up: the main character leaves the woman, like he's dumping her, while he promised to go with her. That story was written from the first person perspective, you're inside the head of the man and you hear him thinking about the strange story of the woman. We didn't want to use a voice-over in the film and we also found that the film needed some dramatic plot, even it's open ended. Otherwise, the ending would be too flat, a story is something different than a short film. We also changed the main person into a writer , that's 'scanning' the library for a new book he's writing which has the same events as he is running into in the library. Like he's in control of real life events, while the woman is accusing him of something similar, but in a total different way.
We did a casting with some actors who wanted to work for free on this project, which they can use for their curriculum. The music was written specifically for this project, the composer and I only talked about 'modern classical music/minimal music' to support the visual atmosphere, making it more surreal than a library normally is. We had about 25 volunteers as extra, to fill up the library and cafe, as both locations were closed during the shooting days. We had a very basic 3 redhead 800 Watt lights set. Audio was picked up on a boom microphone, operated by a professional soundman, and it was recorded on the cameratape using XLR connections. I shot all the scenes with the DVX100 (PAL version) in letterboxed widescreen. I changed the footage with Vegas into 16:9 anamorphic widescreen digitally and added a 1:2.00 aspect ratio letterboxing to that format. The color correction was very basic: some desaturation and a increased contrast/highlights setting. We had 2 shooting days on location, which was very tight we found out afterwards. We would have wanted to do more experimenting with the cafe scenes, but you can't have it all.... The bathroom scene was done at my own home in 3 hours, we couldn't find a suitable place somewhere else that met our needs (enough natural light en enough room to film from behind the woman). Editing and audiomixing took about a month and was done by myself getting feedback from my fellow filmmaker, which learned me to outsource the 5.1 audiomixing next time to a specialist (it took me too much time and headaches, while it's nothing more than a moderate mix when I listen to the final results).
The film costed us around 2,600 dollar to make, including the film rights for the original story Including the revenues from selling a couple of dvd's and 2 sponsors. Most of the money went into food, travel expenses, the soundman, the make-up-lady, and the dvd production (110 copies).
Hope this gives you some idea of the project.

I'll check it out.

I have added a 2nd weblocation for the film, at a different provider - see the original message that's been edited or click www.orphic.nl/tempfilm-subs2.mov . The original download link caused some people trouble having a proper download speed. Hope this is of any help.
