Hey, In contacting potential clients for music videos, one band manager told me to send a reel. I didnt have one and this is what I came up with in a couple mins. I gotta make a dvd, and write out a letter and mail tomorrow? What do you all think? Anything I can do to make it better?

Would this convince you that I knew what I'm doing haha? I dont want it to be horrible but i needa do it quick

Here's my take on reels. I like to keep them simple. Put name and contact info at start over solid colored background (i.e. black) for about 20-30 seconds. Then put it at the end for a minute or so. If they lose everything else, they can at least turn on the video and get the info there.

If you're doing a reel to get clients for music videos (which sounds like you are) put the music video stuff first. The general rule is to put your best shots first...you gotta grab them from the get go. Having the feature film stuff in there is allright, but it can distract someone enough so that the music video clips don't hit them the right way.

I've seen a few of your videos here, and I think there are still some better shots to include. I love the library tracking and dolly shots, those are really good. Some others that come to mind is the one from that video that had the intro of the band fighting. There is that shot of the guitarist on the sidewalk at night that is really good.

Really good stuff though, and I think anything you put out will do you good!

i thought it was good. didn't like the music, but what the hell.
i think it shows that you have talent, and you're not just a guy
with a videocamera. certainly you should put your contact info there.
good luck!

I haven't seen alot of reels for Music video directors which is what it seems like you were going for. It seemed weird to have a song in the background and pictures of a different song playing. Maybe that is how it's always done, but it was distracting.

EDIT: I also think the song you picked is kind of slow and melancholy. Maybe something a bit more upbeat would be better. My .02

the feature film stuff should be taken out I think. The shots seemed flat and the actors needed makeup. I liked the music videos but I would suggest to not put clips of lead singers mouthing lyrics to their own song while another is playing in the background. It's distracting. I also agree with Slim, some more upbeat music might help.

Solid reel, but I agree with some of the comments above: grab their attention fast, sync up the lyrics and the singers. Other than that, I'd hire you.

I don't like the reels that are collections of cool shoots over some music. I have seen number of reels like that and when acting as a "producer" choosing DP i tend to choose from the reels that have samples of the finished product. My personal directing/DP "reel" is just lots of finished videos put together.
