Back of P2 card - Grease pencil spot?

Just wondering if that slick spot on the back of the P2 card is for like a grease pencil or something else for marking the cards. I'm borrowing 2 for thursday and I want to keep them all straight.

Also since i'm asking stupid questions:

Anyone also know how long a fully charage big battery will run the P2store? Will it enable all 15 offloads? Is it advisable to turn the power off in between offloads?

thanks j

Don't Do It!

I wouldn't mark em up and chance ruining your HVX.

Jot down the unique serial numbers on the back and that should be sufficient or name the cards on your Mac...

Although I think the P2 store might overwrite the name...

yeah. I recommend not to mark up those cards. Unless your in broadcast, and can afford oodles of p2 glory, id limit distinguishing them apart to colored tape.

I have been using sharpie on them.

Then use the use the old rewriteable marker trick over the the sharpie to make it all clean and new again.

Works like a charm.

about the batteries. You van easily dump 15 cards with one battery. I think you can dump 60 cards with this battery.
What I do is to use two 5600 batteries for the camera (1 delivered with the camera and the one delivered with the p2 store) and use an old battery from your dvx (if you have one) for your p2 store. With two 5600 batteries you can film the whole day long with HVX.
And yes tuurn the power off. At least if you're not in a hurry because it takes some seconds to start up the store.

WAHT!!! No grease pencil area!!! If it's not one thing it's another!!!1! First noise, then clunking, now this!! That's it!!! I'm cancelling my HVX order!!!!1!one!

Thanks for the info guys. I had thought about the tape thing.. but got paranoid about tape coming loose and then being pulled off inside the cam when I take it out.. I'll give it a shot today though. I just thought that back part with a grease pencil or a dryerase marker would be easy and trouble-free.

Thanks for the battery info dolph. I did end up getting a dual charger of ebay. It's like a sunpack charger. It will charge two batteries simultaneously and it was only 30 bucks... So I can now charge all 3 batteries at the same time.

Guy, I'm loving this camera... and so are the clients. I got a gig already to pay off the P2store. Next week it'll be paying off one card.. then starting on the camera. I'd love to get some gigs to pay it off in a month like Jared did.. but it might take me 2-3 months.. which still isn't bad at all to pay off 10k of gear.

Once I get then new FCP universal bundle.. I'll post some footage. Tomorrow I'm shooting 2 ferrari's compete against two porsches.. and it's going to be the north american debute of some new Nissan sportscar. I'm so looking forward to shooting some race and thong footage. Spring break time...

Thanks again guy for all the info. This site is better than any tech help in the world...

Marking P2 cards

Marking P2 cards

That small white area on the bottom of the card IS for marking them. The instructions that came with the P2 card says this. It recommends to use a certain brand of oil(?) based marker pens, I think. And I also think it mentions NOT sticking any kind of tape to it. I don't have the instructions in front of me.

With that being said, I marked mine with a black China Marker grease pen. :) I don't thinks it's a big deal as it comes off with some gentle circular pressure from a slightly damp cloth. The card is sealed pretty tight anyway. Does anyone remember last year at NAB when Jan pulled out her still-functioning P2 card that she accidentally put through the wash?? :D

Thanks DC. I'll have to read that manual afterall then. I think a grease pencil would be a good choice...

justyn, what mic setup are you using for the racing? i'm planning on shooting some grand prix footage in may when that circuit comes through my area plus my company is partial sponsor to the event. i dont think the stock HVX mic will be able to handle the whiney roar of race car engines.

and please make sure you post some sample thing shots :)

Sure thing brother. I'll post some stuff when Apple releases the damn universal bundle package. Right now I'm only able to offload and back it up and can't cut anything until then.... But as soon as I can I'll post a bunch of stuff for my dvxuser brothers... I have some cool crap done already.. The carnival stuff.. althought it's short because I got kicked out.. looks brilliant.

For audio I'm going to be using my AT815ST mike. It's an M/S mike and I think it'll work really well for capturing the power and volume... I'm really making a happy face video for the client so it will predominantly be video with music and a V.0...

I might also do some lavelier stuff if the time is right. This is going to be my first street course shoot. I've shot some Nascar and some hotrod.. but this should be exciting.. and I'm hoping the start of all kinds of things...

Also, I saw some footage today from a guy who shot a spot with the HVX and the mini 35 adapter for steinmart.. And it was simply breathtaking.. I mean beautiful. Beautiful... Friggin the s. h. i. t. He's had the camera for 4 or 5 weeks plus he owned the DVX and he's got it dialed in already.. Maybe because he's also a high end stills guy... But, anyway, I'd hate to be a guy who owns a varicam and or a cinealta...

The big boy cameras don't delliver that much more for the cost.. weight and aggrevation. I'm tell you all.. this camera is incredible on a really nice broadcast monitor and even on my dell...

The ultimate test is that Clients things so. Clients don't really care about the techno mumbo jumbo. They love that this camera is instantaneous in viewing.. no capturing.. and it looks out of this world.. Sure it's finiky and some stuff looks amazing and some just plain good.. but it still is unbelievable.

I'll try and see if I can get him to give me some of his mini 35 footage... He uses it with panavision lenses... which you can rent here for 30 bucks a day. That's right... 30 bucks a day for a panavision superspeed lens...

and for the record i use a silver sharpie to label that little black spot on the back P2 cards. works well and if you need to retouch it's simple. doesn't wear off too easily.

Thanks Illya.. I tried that and that's a great option.. especially when you are borrowing p2 cards like I am. Such a cool thing for that to be there.
