I felt inspired by macgregors post to post some more fx1 footage. This is just a short clip from last week during my first tests with the camera using my filmtools carmount.

Footage is straight out of the camera. ( no color correction or level adjustment )

Camera was set on full auto for this shot.

It is downrezzed to 1280 x 720p

File size is 24MB's

Was this original colour settings too? Because this camera has great colour for purely auto settings.

It doesn't even look extremely 60i, did you de-interlace this?

Anyways damn if this is what the camera gives you in camera post after post this could look really crazy.

More and more I'm wanting this camera.

Yes, everything was on default, but if I remember correctly I used Cineframe 30... ( now that i'm thinking about it ) but I know I didn't change any color settings or any of that. I didn't use cinematone. White balance was even auto. Then I only deinterlaced in post and dropped it to 1280x720.

The more I have been playing with cineframe 24 and 30 though the more I like it. Yes CF24 looks really studderd and jittery on teh LCD adn in the viewfinder, butonce captured and in post it smooths out a bit. Cineframe 30 looks really close to not using it IMO.

Then once you start doing a littl bit of post work, you start to get some really nice looks.
Ill try to post some examples in a bit.

I like the modded version, did you mess with contrast and/or levels?

Actually I used Magic Bullet Look Suite. I believe I added some slighty black diffusion, tinted the blacks a bit, some gamma ( pre and post ) also. Just little tweaks here and there. I wanted to go for a nice documentary look or a look slightly related to that bleach bypass look thats not to videoish.

p.s. nice car, mind giving specs?

Thanks. It's an 02 GTI 1.8T Only mods are an EVO MS CAI and a Revo Technik ECU reprogram. The engine sounds so loud just because I mic'd the engine while recording. I wanted to see how it would come out. I could have done better on that but it was a first try.

I tried my hand at ccing your footage cuz I really liked it. The corrected version looks a tiny bit blurry because the mac mini I'm on doesn't edit hdv in fcp so I had to downconvert, not knowing how to do this it came out kinda crappy. Also I don't know how to take screen shots in fcp so these are cutouts from literal screen shots of my entire screen

It looks better in motion, if I do end up getting an fx1 something more along the lines of that is what I'll probably go for. But it's getting harder and harder not to get one!

Hey that kind of looks like one of my 'custom' looks except yours has more of a greenish tint to the blacks/shadows. Like I said up there, I started using CF24 mode with cinematone on, and then do some CC in post and it comes out looking really nice.

I found that the camera is a little touchy as far as getting things in perfect focus. The expanded focus feature comes in handy, allowing you to punch in further to make sure you are really in focus. But I wish the focus ring was a little less touchy...it seems when your going for that perfect focus, the slightest movement of the ring will put you out. Just takes some getting used to I guess. I'm pretty pleased with the camera though.

Here's a little clip I just uploaded of some candles in my apartment that I just shot.

FULL res ( well as full as can be compressed lol ) WMV HD 1080p. duration: aprox 6 seconds

only thing done was the MB 'basic' look applied to it which didn't change teh image too much, just the levels a bit. Colors stayed the same.
I thought it just made the image a little nicer looking. I just wish I would have made sure to get that focus right!!! haha

Nice! I think the FX1 is so underestimated. People simply take other peoples' opinions' as a universal truth when what they should do is try it for them selves. Reflex, I posted a 30sec clip here that I CC if you want to take a look. It came out very cinematic.

Thanks, man. I'm still learning my way around the HDV ropes. I've been directing videos for about 7 years and I shot more than 50 videos in SD but HD is a new ball game for me and I'm loving it!
