I'm in G5 sound card hell!

You don't mix with speakers that "sound very good". You want reference monitors that have a flat response- which is to say they don't add anything that isn't really there. Small speakers that sound "good" color the sound and, among other things, enhance the bass. So what happens when you mix to something that enhances the bass? You get a false sense of low end. Play it on real speakers, like in a theatre or anywhere else that isn't adding to the low end, and say goodbye to the bass. Nothing will give your movie a cheaper feel than weak audio.

Well said.

Exactly why I asked, and exactly why looking for this sound card is not the thing to do.

The best thing to do is to premix your film on your system, keeping your audio tracks as separated as possible, and doing all your sound cutting and sound designing. With your final cut ready to mix, bring it to a real sound studio (doesn't have to be a film sound facility, just a place with good audio and reference monitors) and finish your mix over there.

I built custom speaker systems for a few years as a paying hobby, so I have some knowledge of how they work. I understand what you guys are saying about this speaker system and mixing music, and you are right about mixing music on them. But music isn't my primary purpose for these speakers, Foley sounds and getting surround sound effects going to the right speakers is. "Holy War" is science fiction/humor/horror with a bit of social and religious commentary thrown in, and having the right noises coming from the right speakers is the primary goal of this sound system. For this these speakers will give me what I need at a cost that I can afford.

As for music, I have a friend who is going to do the background music for the film once it is on a DVD and then we'll use his home studio for the final music mix. Or if I find a backer with real movie money, not my chump change, then we can go to a local music studio for a professional sound mix. But for now I can only spend so much on sound, so...

David,

I read the first part of your script for Holy War...

It seems a bit cheezy, maybe a rewrite?

Are you offering your services for a rewrite? You only read a couple of bits of the script, so I think it would be hard to offer a real critique of it from that. Read the short story below that that the script is based on, and then you can give me some input on improvements, which I'm open to. That said, it does need work, and Barry Green gave me the address of a good script doctor, unless you are offering your services?

David, don't trust anyone who tells you M-Audio makes amazing cards.

Yeah, it was like he wanted me to buy a card that wouldn't work on my G5 and was pissed when I went in another direction. I checked out M-Audio and they said that the cards were not ready for the new generation of G5's and they should know, right? Of course he could also be one of the God-Bots that follow me around on the Internet trying to annoy me because of what I write on the God/religion biz, who knows.

I was going to offer him some whine with that cheesy remark of his, but that's not why I'm here on this forum.
