Am I an idiot? SOMEONE TELL ME IF I'M AN IDIOT!

Well I didn't know where to put this so I said, what the hell, THE CAFE! Anyway, my local film fest is rapidly approaching its deadline and I had everything planned out. I decided that I would save up for a 35mm adapter (Wayne Kinney's SG35). Then I finally have enough money. Wahoo! But wait! Turns out Wayne's not selling anymore, due to the fact that he's busy making the SG35pro! So crap, what now? I can buy a cheaper one, but I really want to save up for the SG35pro!

So I bought a Letus35A.

But I plan on returning it in about 2 months (the return policy indicates that it's the latest time to return and still get 80% paid back). I will have saved up enough for the SG35pro by then.

So I had to buy a lense too. At about this point I'm realizing I might actually be a moron. I bid on this lens, and hopefully I'll win it:

IS THAT A GOOD LENS (for the Letus)? I MEAN THE F STOP IS HIGH BUT GOD I HOPE ITS A DECENT LENS!

Thanks for your time

You're not the idiot. I'M THE IDIOT.

I purchased an M2 from Red Rock today. (that wasn't the mistake) They use PayPal for checkout, which is fine. My AmEx has always been my primary card on there, so I checked out and noticed at the last second that somehow my bank debit card is now primary. Oops. TOO LATE!

The charge was put through to my bank account, which, poor filmmaker I am, doensn't have nearly enough $$$ to cover the M2. Like everyone else, I make movies on credit cards. Er, or maybe I'm the only IDIOT!

Thirty seconds later I was on the phone with PayPal trying to switch the charge to my AmEx. No dice. Called the bank. No dice, though, oh boy, they'll automatically cover the M2 price and I get to pay the overdraft to the bank ALONG WITH the full price of the M2. Until I do that, all my bills and checks get to bounce. YIPPEE!

Problem is, no way I've got that kind of cash on hand. I'm screwed. Yay!

I wouldn't have even ordered this except for the 12 week lead time. I'm prepping for a project that will have financing eventually, but have to get my hands on things like M2 and HVX now so that there is no last minute scrambling.

Anyway... good choice on that Nikon. I actually looked at that seller's lenses yesterday.

The exact same thing happened to me in the past, actually when I bought my anamorphic adapter from a member here on the board. Even with a return and everything else it overdrafted my account, and paypal won't do a damned thing.

Depending who you bank with you actually have a couple of solutions. I have Bank of America and they worked with me regarding it. The first thing I did was tell my recipient that I had made a mistake and he resent the money on paypal right back to me. I then paid for the adapter on my credit card. Then I called bank of america and told them what happened. They said they would cover the amount and credit the overdraft back to my account after everything was done. It all depends on who you sent the money to, how cool they are, and how quickly you can get in touch with your bank about the situation. Paypal does nothing to help people, and I hate them (yet still use them a lot).

Good luck, I've been there.

If I had my money back for all the wrong equipment I bought in my life.......I'd be very, very rich. So now, everytime I make a purchase I'm a little nervous that I screwed up again. I think that you can get to a point where you're overly cautious and that isn't good at all. Life is an adventure and I truely love the journey, even if it means always being in debt.

Terri - nope, well, at least not enough of one to cover much of the cost. That was my bank's solution... they said "pray you don't have more charges come through this week and get a cash advance to pay us!" At least they were nicer than PayPal... and at least with no cash I won't be getting jacked at the ATM this week!

Yankee - yep, PayPal is one of those necessary evils... I can't stand them, but still use them... and have been using them ever since they were www.X.com! I still remember the changeover. Sigh.

OnlyGiraffe - Good luck with the auction. That's a good price (so far)! Only 15 hours to go!

Okay time for bed. Enough of beating myself up for being an idiot for today!
(actually, my girlfriend stepped in and helped me out, so I'll survive the overdraft charges... and I bet it won't ever happen again!
