PappasArts Ship Jump

Thanks Michael,
We're all family here, and you always will be too!

I'm sorry your HD100 had issues. I'm fortunate, I bought a new model and
have had it for a month. I have yet to see any SSE.

I'm very pleased, to say the least.

Please drop by on occasion. I want to hear first hand how you feel about the H1.
I'm sure it's a decent camera.

Steve

Thanks Steve. Glad you got a new model. I was so disappointed to receive old stock after telling B&H that we only wanted a new one.

The good news is I am getting a brand new in box HD100 from our very own HD100 board Saint Jonathan that is from the current batch and not the old one that B&H sold me. I have finished testing the XLH1 and it's an awesome camera, however for me the tactile control of the HD100 professional design suits my needs better.

If you know anyone that wants a brand new XLH1 bought a week ago from Promax that was used only for our internal testing, they can get it at a good deal.

Michael Pappas

OK...OK Sait Jonathan??? I'm appreciateive and flattered but doing the right thing for people is just a way of life alot of us follow. I don't think Stephen, Full Rez, Mike or the list of great people here in the JVC forum that that goes on and on would do any different. Besides, I'll just add another one to the order we have in at EVS right now so Pappas doesn't have to wait for the camera or the IDX kit. Besides it puts Michael's back in the JVC pack!

I really wanted to stay with the HD100... You can ask Elton how much I "agonized" over the choice between these cameras.

Man, oh man, can Michael agonize. He definitely prefers the HD100 when all's said and done. Me...I like 'em both a lot. I actually needed good 1080i and was attracted to the SDI too, so obviously Canon was the better option for those things.

btw, we hung out on Sat. and shot a little with both H1's down at Laguna Beach. He had his all pimped out with the 16x manual, which incidentally, renders phenomenal imagery even in 24F HD or 1080i. I shot with the "retarded" lens, and still enjoyed it.

Here's a slow mo clip from some 1080i stuff I shot and converted to 60p, then to "overcrank" 24p. It's a full-quality h.264 so it should work for pc folks too.

Cheers, hope you don't mind a Canon interloper chiming in here and there.

Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.

Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.

Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.

Who'd have thought they'd lead ya (Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Here where we need ya (Here where we need ya)

Yeah we tease him a lot cause we've hot him on the spot, welcome back,
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

Well, I look at it this way. Irrespective of whether you're Canon or JVC, Sony or Panasonic, whether you're film-in or film-out, p or i, 24 or 60...whether you're SD, HD or HDV, Mac or PC, the space between the beginning and the end of our lives is like one big Timeline onto which we drop the results of our daily attempts. And like life itself, there's always a way to make it all work together if we find a way to work together. Uprez or downconvert, the JVC area at least, of the DVXuser.com Board epitomizes that which is inscribed upon our most enduring symbol of our way of life, the Statue of Liberty.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

I don't know about you but what more accurately describes the filmmaker; a group which, against monumental odds, struggles, personally and professionally through time and finance to record to film his or her vision. We owe it to ourselves to do all we can to help anyone who subscribes to the struggle.

As you can tell, I listen alot and don't talk too much, but I have to ask. You don't run into too many people like you jlames. Part film maker, part philosopher, part philanthropist (I hope I spelled that right) and apparently all around good guy. I know alot of people in this business and I haven't come across too many of you. Is that you in your avatar and if it is, why are you wearing a uniform if you're a film maker?

Well, I appreciate the compliments but the fact of the matter is that if I am those things, it's by accident. I learned a long while back that you're either a giver or a taker. If you're a taker, you spend all your life trying to acquire things with no time for anything else. But if you're a giver, all you could ever hope for simply comes to you. Sort of a "reap (more, much more than) what you sow" thing. So it has just become a way of life for me and with a perfect family life which is really more a partnership than anything else, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Besides, I like going to bed with a smile knowing that, with the whatever resourses I have like anybody has, I've done all I can to help others with what I have.

As for the uniform, I head up an air wing for the City of Los Angeles which is adjunct to the Department of Emergency Preparedness. I and 12 other pilots, each with high minumum flight hours, ratings and experience levels, support the City's LAPD and LAFD and 11 other departments that go into action when there's an emergency...like the '94 earthquake. The City's paid resoources get stretched so thinly that they can't get to everyone in a state of emergency and that's where we come in. The all-volunteer wing moves people and supplies around the area when the roads are impassable and traffic doesn't permit ground transportation. We respond on search and rescue missions with the LA County Sheriff's Department and, in short, do whatever's required when there's a requirement which can run from a city, county, state or federal emergency or simply a lost hiker. We're not the police or fire. We're simply a highly-trained adjunct to the City that was the brain-child of the head of the Emergency Preparedness Department which coordinates the City's responses in times of emergency.

LOL! Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Can't wait to multi shoot like we did with the basketball game - this time the HD100 and H1....

I also listen allot and don't talk to much and jlames is indeed a straight up guy I have not meet many people like him or a forum such as this ever.

Thank you, all, and I'm looking forward to seeing alot of you at the HD EXPO this week. You know, for the first time I can truthfully say I hope they have those little badges that say "Hello, My name is Xxxxxx". I usually hate those things but it'll be great to put some names with faces like Pappas and I did yesterday in Glendale. And for those of you who don't know him, I was right; he is a great young man and is a good bet for the future of our industry. Ahhhh youth!

Thanks Vision Quest. Listen, funny how people meet up. We have a shoot scheduled for June 25th in Gillette, Wyoming and I noticed you all are in Jackson Hole. If we can find a competent one, we always pick up our 4th cameraperson in the area (cheaper than flying people around) and if you'd like to join up with the team, judging from your experience, we'd be happy to have you.

Good that you're going to be working with the tool you like the most Michael.
I've got to say that after massaging the parameters and mixing in the elements of some others (specifically the nice color work Paolo did), I'm really excitied with the potential of this camera.
We were talking today about how we were about to invest in a whole new super 16 setup a a couple of years ago...especially for a series of projects that were budgeted for film.
At the last minute I opted to go with the Mini35 setup, and married to an XL2, with a range of great fast primes, we got really great results.

The HD100 is like a digital 16mm setup IMO. The price point is kind of ridiulous when you consider what you can do with it, the form factor of a very solidly built, shoulder mount camera with the kind of color and resolution it offers and nice innovations like the Focus Assist.

Hi guys.....
I'm interested in getting more info about this camera. I've done some testing with the HVX...and really like the results...and I love the P2 work flow. REALLY REALLY! LOL. Editing is a dream.

However, the JVC does have some nice things going for it!

How are you guys editing in FCP? Are you shooting to HDV tape, or firestore device? And has anyone use the 2/3" adapter with real HD glass?

Any info you guys have would be cool. Just want to be well informed before my purchase.

The HD100 is so awesome and the look is really like S16 Eastman 250/500asa to HD telecine.

Btw, I own both the Canon XLH1 and the Jvc HD100. I am doing side by side runs today for cinematpography testing. Both cameras a great. I will have more clips coming from the HD100. I shot full gain in Black & White, very rich and sweet looking. I have the XLH1 clips that are stunning going up as well.

Pappas is so cool.

I'm sorry to say that I've downloaded every clip on your website and stored them away, along with every clip that Elton posts. I love the footage that comes from both the HD100 and the XL-H1.

My boss brought back up the issue of cameras again yesterday, and I plan to include the HD100 when we finally get around to testing to see which one suits our needs.

HVX200 will be there, but I have a feeling it won't be the camera we choose.

Thanks for posting all of the visual goodies.

Kholi,

You will be impressed with the HD100.

I believe a lot of Videographers are waking up to how well this camera performs.

If there's one area that's a bit weak, it's the CA possibility with the 16X lens.
Now if I only had another 9K for the 13X lens!

I'm not finding this that bad of an issue, and I've been able to overcome most of the CA by recomposing and changng aperture and/or focal length.
