HD Expo & a Chance Meeting

As has been the story for about 3 years now, one of my heros, Kristin Petrovich threw one heck of a party and although I don't post much, I have to tell this forum 2 things that stuck out from what turned out to be not just another HD Expo.

First, as I'm listening to a panel of the greatest cinamatographers of recent time talk about conventional versus electronic media George Dibie an industry great kept referring to a gentleman in the front row obviously knowing him as a few others up on the panel did. Then I return to the second forum and find the same gentleman seated in another area of the first row and the "new" film makers are discussing the merits of digital cinema when the moderator gets up, hands this same gentleman a microphone and asks him to repeat the comment he made as to changes the new digital media has created. I sat and listened as the whole arena listened to this guy, heads of the panel members nodding in agreement, talk about confluence in film making. 15 minutes later and we're finally off to another subject but not until I and alot of other people understood alot more about where we might be headed and why from a great panel and a guy in the audience. I had to find out who this guy was and it was this forum's one and only St. Jonathan. (He said don't call him that but I can't help it) I spent the better part of 2 hours with him after that discussing the merits of the JVC relative to the other sub$10,000 cameras and without slamming anyone, he had convinced me that the JVC was the best for what I am about to do. I mean we talked about everything and the points he made, in addition to the JVC, was how important this board and this forum and others like it are to the new art of film making, how important people like Jared Land who runs this board is to people like us and how important the experience that this board's contributors make is. With this guy's knowledge and experience, he could have been what so many others in this industry are and just talked about himself but instead he chose to talk about others contributions and others products.

He introduced me to the JVC reps who were unbelievably professional and awesome, the people who handle his companys NLE systems NLE Systems, Inc and his lighting, power suppliers and whomever he didn't introduce me to, they came up to him. So I have to tell you, people all too often are overlooked when it comes to the good things they do but we're sure quick to slam people publicly and I didn't want that to happen here. If you ever get a chance to meet this guy, you'll understand like I do now what he's all about in helping others help themselves through this board and a hundred other charity efforts he's involved with that no one knows about.

The second thing than happened is, with my background, Rolodex and money saved, I'm preparing to leave a studio and head out on my own. 2 hours with Johnathon on a chance meeting pushed me over the edge and convinced me that the JVC was the way to go for what I'm going to do and that there are a great group of people out there to help me. So with that in hand, I'm headed to EVS to drain a little off the top of my account and then I'll be back to listen but to post alot more. This is a great group here who sticks together to help each other. I haven't found that anywhere else like it is here. I hope it's OK once I leave and get settled in my new production business if I post the name here to try and generate a little business and good will.

I just read this post and I want to thank you very much for your kind words. As I said to you, life is like a timeline and with the right support from the right people, there's nothing you can't do on your own that you're not doing for the studio and this and other forums are the place to go for support. Your ideas are fabulous and I'll help you in any way I can ge3t to where you're going. I meant what I said that there's a void in this industry of female filmmakers (and it's filmmakers not film makers!!!) whose gentle touch somehow comes through on the answer print and anyone who's worth his or her salt will feel it at that point and say, "OK, that's the release". You don't have to do "Little Women" to have your sensitivity come through on the action things you were talking about.

Thanks again and please solicit your issues to this Board anytime. There are some great minds here and experience you just can't buy. And by the way, Tim Dashwood is the name I couldn't recall last night. Very bright, very schooled in the streets of filmmaking. And finally, it's J-o-n-a-t-h-A-n with no "h" but that's OK, read a recent post. I've been called worse and lived to laugh it off.
