Looks like the Redrock is a hit! I'm hoping to pick one up soon. For price vs. performance, canon or nikon lenses?

Wow. Sounds like the JVC, with Redrockmicro M2 & Nikon lenses is what they really liked:

"JVC has taken a tremendous risk and overcome a nearly devastating obstacle, but it generates the most filmic, cinematic image of the cameras tested, reminding me of Kodak Vision 7218 that has been telecine transfered to HD."

Well they are just repeating what many of us M2 owners already know. It's a fantastic piece of kit, way underpriced.

"M2: This $500 unit was something of a shock. Who would have thought an engineering genius from Texas could design and set in motion a patent for his M2 adaptor that is actually quite suited to drama – and which is designed to work with old Nikon and Canon SLR lenses, of which there are legion sitting round the world gathering dust since the advent of digital photography, but which still feature exceptionally good optics?

The Redrock M2 is the only 35mm cine adaptor that exhibits a nearly lossless resolution and no image degradation, as there are no visible grains to throw a wrench into the MPEG2 HDV encoder. There is no artifacting and no soft edges.

The M2 can be notched down to T16, and I have even closed down to T22 with a Nikon 80-200mm SLR lens. No grain visible, no breakdown from MPEG and grain battling it out, and no visual loss of resolution. "

Guess I'll have to dust my M2 off... boy this report was brutal to the Cinemek fans. I always knew static would never fly. Wow - Redrock is probably going to get 100 orders today - well, good for them.

I will advise that it's not exactly plug and play. There's some setup involved and you will likely need to buy the shim kit.

It's nice to know at least one of my recent purchase decisions was on the mark.

little friction

little friction

note:

panasonic refused to participate in this and refused to give a test camera to them. So there was a little friction, for a moment. So the fact that the HVX wasn't elaborated on much (DVCPRO HD etc.) has to be noted.

just for reference here is the link where timmy discusses the panny's disinterest

EDIT: excuse me , i meant Taylor for the link.

I've been testing the HD-100 vs. the HVX-200 for the past 2 weeks and I'm pretty sure I know why they didn't want to play.

Can you elaborate? Jan doesn't like Keifer Sutherland?

Let's put the brakes on something right here. Panasonic did NOT refuse to play! Panasonic in fact not only volunteered cameras, they volunteered to send me along and pay my way to help them get the best from it, and they offered to get the first genuine mini35 for the HVX to use in the test too. Those performing the test didn't want to accept such an offer because they wanted to be completely independent of any manufacturer's assistance.

But I just want to point out -- it's completely a mischaracterization to say Panasonic didn't want to help. Panasonic bent over backwards to try to participate.

There are good reasons to prefer the HVX... but I don't think the reasons apply to the set of 24.

People really need to test these cameras themselves. It would take a long time for me to elaborate on everything but the picture quality of the HD-100 is impressive and that what I look for most. If I was shooting skateboarding stuff or hip, cool videos/commercials that didn't require the most resolution and had a lot of frame rate changes the HVX200 would be the ticket.

Also - you can get a breathless rack focus out of the JVC by racking with the macro adjustment instead. I nailed it on the first try, very smooth and easy... but you need an assistant and you can't use follow focus gear... personally, lens breathing doesn't bother me as much as the 100 less lines of resolution the HVX has bothers me. You gotta pick your poison on these cameras.

I'm wondering if this is a brand new model (Improved GG) or is it just a new camera port to fit the HVX??
