Monitoring 720p FCP Timeline with SD Monitor

Just received my HVX and I am starting the workflow process for the P2. Everything so far is going smooth, importing, editing and working with P2, except that I am having troubles viewing the playback of the 720p timeline on my SD Monitor. I am running FCP 5.0.4 on my laptop and it plays back prefectly on my laptop, but I can't get it play back on my SD Monitor. Currently, I only get an image on my SD Monitor when the playhead in my FCP timeline is frozen on a frame. As soon as I play the timeline, my SD monitor goes black and I can only view the footage on the viewer window of Final cut pro. Are there any solutions for this, or do I need an HD monitor to
playback the timeline on for viewing. Or do I need to get an HD link card. Any help with this is much appreciated!:badputer:

do you have the powerbook connected via firewire and s-video to your monitor? did you turn off digital cinema desktop preview in video playback? is external video set to, "all frames"? also, make sure the canvas or viewer screens are set to fit to window.

I have the powerbook connected via firewire to my minidv tape deck, then I am running RCA/BNC to the monitor. Do I need to run s-video from the tape deck out to the monitor?

s-video will giveyoua cleanerpicture, though it won'tshow the full rez of hd content only dv,dvcpro and dvcpro50.

But what do I need to do to just view the playback on my timeline for a SD monitor?
Right now, I only see an image on my SD monitor when the playhead is stopped on a frame.

The problem you are having is HD is not SD and the SD monitor can't read the info being sent to it. One work around to this issue is to set the sequence to Uncompressed instead of DVCPRO-HD 760p. You will need to render but the sequence wiil then play back on the monitor usually letterboxed if you have 16:9 switch on the SD monitor. You could actuallly use any of the SD codecs to in the sequence and make it work but then you will be down converting the image from HD. Uncompressed will play back and not destroy the rez. The reason you can watch it on the Laptop is because the LCD on the laptop is digital and can handle the HD signal.

I usually play back on my LCD display and only use the SD monitors to test what it will look like on CRT and to double check my Color Corrections with my Studio SD monitor vs. LCD.

Got it working! Thanks for the advice! I have been putting off getting the Dell Monitor, so I just want to use my SD Monitor Temporarily.

When I set an uncompressed timeline in FCP, what frame rate is the timeline set at? All of my 720pn footage plays back as though it were undercranked, so does the uncompressed timeline give you 29.97 frames/sec? Also which of the settings do I want the sequence to have for the frame size under the general sequence setting to view it on a SD monitor, would I chose just regular NTSC, CCIR 601 NTSC 40:27 (what does that me anway?) , HD (960x720p). I assume the NTSC mode when I want to view on a SD monitor, and the 960x720p for HD monitor, is this correct?
