I was wondering what kind of hardware you need to edit hvx200 HD footage . I use final cut pro now with the newest powerbook but I dont think that is going to be good enough.Any words of advice ?

What do you mean by latest powerbook, the MacBook Pro? Because they doesn't yet run FCP. If you have a Powerbook then you should be fine. I have been cutting 720p footage on my iBook in the field. I can't do full screen preview but it's been fine for viewing shots, cutting a few shots together. Speed and ease of use will depend on what the specs of your Powerbook are, but it's more than adequate power to cut 720p footage and the 1080i footage.

I have a 1.67 and can play back the DvCPROHD footage just fine. just make sure your timeline settings matc the video settings. Ie, I had to render 720/60p in a 720/24p timeline. But when I switched the timeline settings to match the clip, it was fine.

If people can edit DVCProHD on 1 ghz 12"powerbooks, why can't you with the latest model?

cool cool thanks so much I guess If I run into that timeline problem in a month I will try to remeber this cause that is when I am editing this footage. Do you know if I can pull in footage from a varicam on to my powerbook or will a I need some sort of HD conversion box?(See how much I know about HD hah)

It should be no harder to edit VC footage than HVX on a laptop.

Getting them bits'n bytes in and ut is a different story.

If you're in NTSC-land, you should be fine by renting an AJ 1200 deck with the firewire option.

But if you're in PAL land, you'll have to take the footage through some sort of HD-SDI card and capture your 720p25 footage at 1080 p25 in an i50 stream as there is no 1080 or 720 p25 standard out there yet. The 1200 does the upscaling, and you'll still be able to capture at DVCPRO-HD compression, but you'll need a desktop fpr the card (Decklink or AJA)
