I'm officially off your back, Ravin.

You and I are both Spielberg fans. Let's both just complain about Munich not winning anything. Deal? :)

deal. really quick though, please dont think that i dont respect your opinion. i really do respect it and i was just stating my opinion.

now to Munich. Spielberg should have won Best Director (although i still would have been happy if Haggis or even Clooney won) but Spielberg is the man. I don't think it should have won Best Picture. I did want it to win Best Score though cause the music was amazing in it. John Williams is the master composer.

I think the biggest problem is that mainstream rap sucks, sucks, sucks. It's embarassing, negative, and reinforces the worst stereotypes of urban life. And the music is usually mind-numbingly boring and uninspired. There is alot of good stuff on small labels that you have to dig for IMO. Rap is an art form for the studio if you ask me - it doesn't translate well to live performances because that's not where it's creative soul lies. Creative hip-hop dj's and producers are some of the best contemporary artists, I think. I look at hip-hop as a musical collage appropriating from years of recorded music. To say it's not music is like saying Andy Warhol is not an artist because he doesn't paint like Michelangelo or Caravaggio.

Actually, I think rap's relationship to more traditional music is like film's relationship to theater. I'd be willing to bet that MANY big name actors could never carry a play. Without the process of editing, multiple takes, close ups, whispered dialogue, etc - many of these guys would come across as horrible. But that doesn't mean they're not actors (even great actors), it just means their talents and abilities lend themselves better to certain forms of creating.

Hmmm....

Are we gonna have to add rap as a no no like politics and religion? :cheesy:

Only if we add "Andromeda Resolution/HVX Resolution", and "which camera is better" as well. Those tired lines get pretty heated too.

EDIT: And it would have been nice to see Munich nominated for Cinematography. It had a unique style that should have been recognized.

Sorry - I'm not trying to stay on anyone's back here - the "truce" was called while I was writing my post. To be honest, I'm usually not a huge Spielberg fan but Munich totally changed my mind. It easily had my vote for best picture.

brotherman i have to disagree with you on that. Munich in my opinon was the best picture. Crash for best director.:nads:

oh i did forget to mention how funny LILY TOMLIN and MERLE STREEP was. TOMLIN TALKED about how hard to get thru the security man i laughed. as some of you know she is a big weed blower. she was stoned

the only thing more ridiculous than arguing whether a movie is good or not is arguing whether a song/genre of song is good or not. Music affects you on such a primal level. You either enjoy it or you don't. You have a better chance of trying to convince someone that a joke they didn't laugh at is funny than change their musical taste.

yeah Munich was great. I really did love it and as I said in the Munich thread it really made me think about things going on in the world. I just really loved Crash more (I know its sacrelige for ME to like something over a Spielberg movie ;) ). It was beautifully shot, the acting was pretty good and overall it was a solid film in my opinion. For a while it was hard for me to decide what I wanted to win so the Friday before the Oscars I went to a theater and saw Munich again, then came home and put my Crash DVD in. Crash won out over me. Either way I would have been happy at the Best Picture winner.

This is a great analogy and it makes a lot of sense. Rap is heavily produced in the same way films are. It may just be harder for us to accept this idea as filmmakerrs (self-serving bias.) And in many ways, film is the "wicked stepchild" of the arts, screenwriters are often looked on as creative whores or less than novelists and other writers because they don't inscribe traditional tomes of wuthering heights bullsh*t. But we as filmmakers know better.

I took that to be a "I'm a has-been and security didn't recognize me" joke, not a "I'm a stoner" joke. Either way, it was pretty damn funny.

something where instuments are played to accompany vocal harmonies. rap just has a person talk with no horns, bassists, guitar players, drummers, etc. ... its all electronic.

Pick up Jazzmatazz by Guru and let me know what you think.

and I'm done with the Rap issue.

it's sad when you're a female over 40 and you're considered a has been? with all her talent that's not reconized by the young just pushed aside because you're not marketable. what does that tell you about the younger generation? kind of like the old ..let's just stick them away in some institution and forget about them, they're no good to us! no respect, the younger gen. think they got it going on sh it. they been bought and sold, lined up and homogenized, dropped down to the level of Paris Hilton trilogy. i'm not attacking you, just that is the way it is. but thank god someone had some class and put two old broads up there that have it going on; no script, all improvised:love4:

I have mad respect for veteran actors, especially actresses working in an industry that often undervalues them. In other words, I agree with you. The "has-been" thing was the essence of the joke made by them, but by no means was it the essence of my beliefs. I think Tomlin and Streep were satirizing Hollywood's famous dissing of older performers and that's why I found it funny.

I think it's changing a little bit in Hollywood and older actresses are in higher demand than they were say, 10 years ago. But we still have a long way to go.

<<EDIT: Seriously, that was all improvised, no script? Damn that's impressive.>>

Haven't read any other posts, but I'm REALLY dissapointed that Munich didn't win anything. It was my favorite drama of last year. Granted I never saw Brokeback, but CRASH doesn't deserve to win best picture. I turned that film off half-way.

Agreed! I love Shyamalan's work... so lush and suave.
Did they change the meanings of 'lush' and 'suave' to 'stupid' and 'dumb'?
