Tricky PIP (for me)

Hello hello,

I've shot some basketball footage (2 cameras) and am trying to get a particurlar PIP effect. Both shots started full back (wide? haven't got the jargon down yet), while a player was at the free throw line. One camera zoomed in to catch half the amount of information. His reaction while the ball was in flight was very interesting (no, no, no...yes!), so I'd like to put that in the top right hand corner.

My problem is that the zoomed shot doesn't keep him in the centre of frame (and he moves some) - so I can keyframe to follow him, but this just gives me a track with a small picture that moves over various areas of the second track. Is there any way I can keep this in the top right of the second track?

I've been playing with this for awhile, but no luck - can anyone offer a suggestion?

Thanks,

Steve

I would try this:
put the zoomed shot on the timeline by itself at full size
do the keyframe stuff to follow the player keeping him centered
render the zoom/follow clip to a new file
then do the PIP effect using the newly rendered file/clip

Here's another possible way to do it:
Crop your zoomed shot using the event/pan crop tool located on the clip, and then keep centered using position keyframes. Then, using the track motion tool on your video track header, create the PIP.

For some reason PIP for this shot doesn't sound as interesting to me. Have you thought about doing a side by side split screen, or top/bottom split? Could have a cool look ... if done well, with a white/black line separating the two.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

It seems I'll be doing plenty of repositioning, but I'm happy with results in the short amount of time that I've played with it.

Envision - no risk of me being closed minded with you around! I'll be trying out some different looks. Appreciate your input (and enjoyed your work on your trip to Disneyland).

LOL, hey it's not like I SAW your work, then gave that opinion ... just how I envisioned it in my head. Who knows, you may make that PIP look incredibly great. Glad you enjoyed the Disney video ... thanks!

That may not have come across clearly Envi - I liked that you gave me different suggestions. Thinking outside the box (pun not intended:) is a constant challenge in this game...and perhaps the most rewarding part of the journey.

Is editing of particular interest to you? You seem to give a lot of help in this section.

Not that I'm necessarily good at it ... but of everything I do so far with audio/video, editing is what I'm strongest at.
