Strange conversion

Hello everyone, I got news from my teammates that we supposed to got PAL and SECAM footage to convert into NTSC footage for a documentary. The problem his, I don't know if it's on 8mm tapes, DV tapes, Betacam tapes, quicktime or avi. If it's only on tapes, I got a problem because I don't have equipements to capture those footage properly. We are short on the deathline, so we cannot afford to barrow a special machine that reads PAL or SECAM footage. I hope they got data only, it would be easier.

But I was thinking... If the client got a PAL camera for it's DV tapes, would it be possible to capture it directly on our workstations via firewire?

Well, we got PAL codecs on our workstation if I remember. The problem would be the SECAM.

I don't think you need to worry about SECAM -- far as I know, SECAM production is shot in PAL and only turned into SECAM at the last stage of prepartion for broadcast. I think all DVDs remain PAL, and in SECAM regions PAL is used for most distributions and all productions, with 'broadcast' the one exception.

Not certain though, as my work has kept me in PAL countries ...

Cheers,
GB
