Seeking guidance converting files for FCP

Cheers, Gang!

I'm hoping someone with a good working knowledge of codecs and compressions can get me on the right path. I've been handed several hard drives worth of footage to cut together. There are actually 2 sets of drives with identical material. One set has everything encoded as .avi. The other set is the same material in .m4v. The original footage was shot SD (Betacam). I realize .m4v is a very compressed format (the .avi files are several gigs in size while their .m4v counterparts are often under a gig). The .m4vs look very good, I think, but I know he is hoping to potentially use this for broadcast in some fashion.

So, my question is this: is it better for me to start with the larger .avi files and convert them to .mov, or will the .m4v files be sufficient if I convert them to .mov? Some of these clips are an hour long, so it will be time consuming. Also, does anyone know the best settings to convert without further compressing and thereby losing more quality? trying to avoid a nightmare with all of this. Yeesh.
