Recompression in DVD A

I just finished a wedding video and when i render the final movie, I render as a mpeg 2 main concept, or however that reads in vegas. Hopefully that is the correct format, if not there is my problem. If not, then why when i get into DVD A does it say that the video and audio will be recompressed when it prepares the files?

Oh, for those that replied thanks for the help with masking the arrows over the basketball footage.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

Be sure to use the appropriate DVD Architect template (24p, widescreen, etc.) Just using the MainConcept encoder won't necessarily make it unnecessary for DVD A to render.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

You didn't mention whether you rendered the audio in Vegas before going into DVDA but it should be rendered (ac3 codec) separately from the video in Vegas before going into DVDA. For dvd play the video should be rendered to mpeg 2 (main concept). Also, when you arrange buttons, menus, etc in dvda there will be some (small) amount of rendering necessary before the dvd can be burned.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

Is there an order to which should be rendered first, audio or video when encoding to ac3 and mpeg2 respectively? It is taking about 2 hours for Dvd A to recompress this 1.5 hour video that was already encoded to mpeg 2 (main concept). Does that sound too long?

Re: Recompression in DVD A

The order (ac-3 v. mpeg-2) you render doesn't matter as long they both have the same file name.

Not knowing what template settings you used to render to MPEG-2, it's hard to say if that's "too long," but it doesn't sound unreasonable. It's not much slower than real time.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

ok, well then i guess i'll just wait it out. I'm what some may call a procrastinator. So time isn't on my side right now. thanks for the info david and kmcgrath

Re: Recompression in DVD A

I had this problem for the first time last night. I used the proper DVDA 24p preset for the MPEG2, yet DVDA2 insisted that my video was not in the proper format and recompressed it. It puzzles me.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

Did you mess with it at all? Or did you use the straight template with no changes?

Re: Recompression in DVD A

All I did was adjust the bitrate to 8Mb/sec and switch to straight 24p (without adding the pulldown).

Ahhh... what settings do you use for a 24p disc?

Re: Recompression in DVD A

I don't know if this may relates to my posting a couple of days ago ("rendering in 24p for dvd burn"). Noone has replied to the posting?? I selected the 24p template, but there is a custom video dropdown menu where you can select frame rate of "24p" or "24p with 2-3 pulldown". I am trying to get native 24p onto the dvd and then rely on the dvd player to insert the pulldown, but I am not sure of the effect of checking either of the above two options in the pulldown menu. Anyone out there who knows please check my posting of a couple of days ago if you can help out. Thanks in advance.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

At the default settings in DVD-A2, you'll remove pulldown when you drop the video file in. Use 24p with 2:3 pulldown.

However, remember that only DVD-A2 does this.

Re: Recompression in DVD A

Are you saying that I should reinsert the pulldown before rendering in Vegas (by selecting frame rate of "24p with 2-3 pulldown" in the custom video dropdown menu after selecting "render as", render, then drop the file into dvda, then remove the pulldown when final rendering in dvda?

Re: Recompression in DVD A

OK, thanks much. I will reread the whitepaper and convince myself I understand. I just got into dv editing, and I am a bit anal about making sure I understand everything. JUst got Vegas and it took me awhile to figure out audio bus and assignable effect routing, but it is finally starting to make sense (the audio signal flow diagram in the Vegas pdf helped tremendously).
