Post render editing of AC3?

So, I've rendered a two hour project to mpeg-2 and ac3, but need to trim a little off the front end but can't seen to do any editing of ac3 with anything Sony (Vegas6, Acid, Sound Forge 7, DVDA3)....

The idea of having to trim the original source .wav and .avi files in Vegas and then render out the entire project again seems really lame, so hopefully I'm the lame one and am missing something obvious.

Thanks in advance for any insight or tips.

By the way, I'm currently in the process of using a free audio transcoding tool called 'BeSweet':

...so far it seems like a great tool, it makes me wonder why the technology is not part of Vegas or one of the other Sony Audio/Video products.

You're SUPPOSED to be able to drop an AC-3 file onto the Vegas 6.0c timeline and be able to edit it, but I have yet to get it to work.

Maybe Spot can shed some light on this one . . .

In any case, rendering a new AC-3 file doesn't take terribly long. You want to trim a little off the end? Just define a shorter loop region.

Well, unfortunately I don't appear to have all the .wav files on my disk anymore, so I would have had to pull from tape again. This was a project that had multiple clips. Anyhow, I used the 'BeSweet' transcoder to get the .ac3 back to wav but still had to render the smaller loop region out for both the mpeg-2 and .wav (man I wish I could have just chopped a little off and "saved" the new smaller files as opposed to "rendering" them, seeing how there was no new information other than begin and end points).

That was before Vegas 6.0c. 6.0c was supposed to be bring that functionality into Vegas without having to install Movie Studio + DVD Platinium.

That being said, I couldn't get it to work with installing Movie Studio, either.

So, I don't know what the problem is. I have it installed on two different machines, and it doesn't work on either one.

you know, I thought I read that somewhere, but dismissed it as it seemed silly that Movie Studio would give me something I don't have in Vegas... go figure.

Thanks for the reminder and tip, I'll give it a try for future reference.

...hmmm, my post was written before seeing David's, perhaps I'll wait on the Movie Studio experiment to see what other info comes up. Thanks.

Actually, you're not able to edit a straight AC3 file that isn't muxed to an mpeg file. That's part of how Sony protects themselves from piracy lawsuits...I believe, anyway.
You can only import an AC3 file that is part of a VOB file or DVD-Video file from a DVD Camcorder. In other words, audio married to video.

Well then, I guess a transcoder tool like 'BeSweet' is the only answer for the situation I was in... perhaps there's a legal reason for this missing functionality, but it's extremely inconvenient to say the least.
