NTSC <=> PAL conversion?

Say I have equipment that can record/play both NTSC and PAL (like Panasonic AG-DV2500), but cannot convert. Can I take footage recorded with DVX in NTSC and output it as PAL using Vegas? I suspect it would be just a matter of setting up the right project properties and zooming/cropping the image, but just want to make sure that's the case...

It's something I want to know before I pitch the purchase of AG-DV2500 to my chief-in-command.

Re: NTSC <=> PAL conversion?

Unfortunatly, it is not as easy as just recording one source into another. Not only is PAL a different frame size, it is also a different frame rate. There is software to convert PAL>NTSC>PAL (DV atlantis, www.dvfilm.com) but there will always be a degredation in quality as well as the extensive rendering that goes into the conversion.

Re: NTSC <=> PAL conversion?

Thanks.

From what I've heard and read, unless timing is critical, the difference between 24P and 25P is negligible (less than 5%), so I am not worried about that. I am more concerned about the different resolutions, and even that's not a biggie. I am basically looking for a way to eventually distribute my documentary in Czech Republic as it's related to that (PAL) country. However, it's shot and edited in NTSC.

Of course, the main question for me is the technical feasibility of using Vegas to output something captured and edited in NTSC on 24P timeline to PAL on 25P timeline.

Re: NTSC <=> PAL conversion?

I made a wedding video , shot 24p NTSC. Edited in same format. Then rendered out the final. Burnt some NTSC DVD's in DVD Arc. No problem. Changed the DVD Arc file properties from NTSC to PAL. It had to rerender the footage, that took a little time. But had PAL DVD's. Sent to friends in PAL countries, and they had no problem viewing them

Re: NTSC <=> PAL conversion?

check atlantis software it transfers pal to ntsc but they have a software which does the opposite .GO TO: www.dvfilm.com

"Atlantis 2 is here! Film-motion NTSC/PAL conversion, both ways, and for Windows or Mac. Click for more info"

Re: NTSC <=> PAL conversion?

Thanks guys for all the answers. I am aware of the dvfilm solution, but I am weary of buying another software. I am really just interested if it can be done in Vegas.

Judging from Arcburn's post, it should work.

Thanks again!
