MP4 import slows Vegas to a crawl

I've been using Vegas for quite some time and generally I am very happy with it, but recently I've been experiencing some difficulties. I am hoping some of you Vegas gurus will be able to point me in right direction. I've got some MP4 clips that I am importing into Vegas (360x240, 29.97fps). First few clips are all right, but then Vegas slows down considerably.

When I switch to another app and then back to Vegas, the timeline events show 'Media offline', and if I try to do anything on the menu bar, it shows 'Not responding'. It can take as long as twenty minutes for Vegas to become 'alive' again. During that time, Task Manager shows CPU utilization about 50%, with Vegas memory footprint steadily increasing to over 1 GB, as well as number of handles. This happens even if I have a single event on the timeline.

The MP4 files are from a consumer camera (Sanyo Xacti HD2). I am thinking it's either something wrong with the MP4 files, or Vegas is not configured properly for the large number of clips in the media list (about 500). The project properties match the MP4s (360x240, 29.97fps).

Any ideas are appreciated.

While I don't have a real answer for you, I will say that decoding an mp4 is a lot of work for the processor. Ever look at your cpu load while playing back a mp4 in Quicktime or similar?

Thanks! That's what I thought at first, but even switching back to Vegas from another app AFTER the clips have been imported, with only a single clip on the timeline, it takes forever to come back alive... so I don't know... it's disheartening.
