I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Another good thing to remember is though - if it looks cool, it can work, too. Smoke, or no smoke ;D

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Yeah you hit the nail on the head TC... I was gone to shoot a higher budget stunt filled feature, and just before I also produced a 13 episode series on stunt/effects work for broadcast, so I have seen and done almost every stunt there is.. wire falls, box falls, blowing stuff up, fights etc. The stunt thing was one of the most fun I have ever had, specially since those stunt guys are pimps and know how to have fun heh heh.. The guy that blew that fishtank up was the stunt co-ordinator from Fear Factor.

anyways the link isnt broken, you need to right click to download it as it wont stream.

monte thats what a zirc gun does. It will make a hole, well at least a chip that looks like a hole in a windshield just because its hard, and since its zirconium, it creates a spark with a bit of powder when it hits something (ie the glass). you should try and get your hands on one because they are really really cool.

I will lookinto this/..[/quote]

this is true , but certain materials will give off more or less dust than others. like a tin can isnt going to give you any dust at all, and a watermellon sprays enough mist into the air to make you want to try and drink the air. when you shoot a windshield with pretty much any standard round of ammunition it will gives you a nice dust cloud.. youll have to believe me on this one. or you could just check out the below links where artbeats has shot various peices of glass , and filmed it for people who need to composite it into their film like yourself. the larger the round, the more the dust. heck you can throw a big rock off a cliff at it , and still get some glass dust in the air it doesnt take much to get dust from glass pending the type of glass. i had to shoot (with a gun) a tv last week for a film and i got plenty of nasty galss particle dust there as well. or if youve ever shatterd a flourescent , or regular light bulb youll get dust as well -partially fro the coatings but its dust none the less ..DO NOT BREATH IT IN IF YOU ACTUALLY EVER DO IT!!..examples->

non laminated glass:

laminated glass (windshield)

anyway i still think you should check out artbeats gunstock footage that the above links are from. heres a link to the page :

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Jarred, I know what you're talking about I think in reference to a ZIRC. I have owned a spyder compact and a bko 03 after 2 years of playing paintball, got out of it cus the bko never worked and my knees got jacked from playing so often...

IAL - The laminated glass is the look that I'm after, the windshield.

The only thing I don't like about that is if i were to key it into the scene, I couldn't be at an angle or anything like I would've wanted...

Y'know what I'm sayin?

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

I believe After Effects allows you to put composited video at an angle... it kind of distorts the image and fakes putting it at an angle... the clouds of smoke and debris you'll have to tweak though...

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

One thing to keep in mind (if you are talking about car glass) is that it is designed to break into beads (less chance of cutting)... not sure if it would *really* leave a hole or not... but I suspect it would. Just something to keep in mind if you do go shoot a pane of glass.

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

uh, ..just to clarify in case anyone missed it. my post above contains links that show exactly what happens when you shoot glass.(laminate, and non laminate)

monte,
I have a spyder compact too.. the original A version. :P .
and yeah, like thinspirit said, you can composite it in 3d space, or use rotation in 2d space in AE to put it however you want it.. you could composite in a little dust oe debris to match as well. you'd really just have to pick your angle to make the shot work as planned in advance. id suggest only showing it breifly.

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

On the Bruce Willis Die Hard film, when the bad guys shot up the lobby, the bullet holes were drawn on the glass with white grease pencil and merged in post.

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

tempered glass shatters small.. windshields dont, they get holes if you shoot em. you can even take a look at some car accident photos and you will see usually theres a hole in the windshield from some poor dudes head hitting it.

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

the easiest way would be to just overlay individual photoshop files onto the glass for each hit, like i think someone already suggested. depending on the angles you're shooting at, this might be easy.

then you can use particular or something similar to create the disintegration & any shards of glass for the frame or so surrounding the impact.

all of this said, alamdv looks pretty rad too.

let us know how it goes!

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Sorry I missed this post (there are 100,000 posts… I still got a dozen or so to view!)

Anyway – I have a glass business and what IAL, Jarred and the others are pointing out is bang on. Especially IAL’s links. If you want side or rear car windows, they shatter. House glass breaks in big messy deadly chunks. (I recommend never playing with big plate glass – EVER – Go After Effects, hire someone - whatever) Windshields will pop holes – as in clips IAL linked.

DO NOT do any glass breaking anywhere near the crew or talent! (Or untalented ;) ) Safety glass is not that safe – Just “safer” then normal glass as it won’t produce large vain slashing pieces. But still, even the little pieces are sharp and at high velocity – deadly. Movie sets for the most part don’t use real glass. It’s candy. And they have highly trained experts like Jarred. ;D Some things just can’t be done by the little guy. I would love to blow a house up in one massive fireball - but that would be crazy. Cool, but crazy 8)

The options you have are of coarse CGI and real. Stock footage is a pretty good way to go – Hell, ya can put a bullet hole anywhere! This is really your best option – As noted. Believe it or not - even at angles, this will actually end up looking more “real” then doing it real! You can’t obviously have the cast sitting in the car while you shoot at them so no matter what; it has to be finessed on the computer. Try fooling around with it before you go real. Couple quick edits and bang, bang – Ya got action.

Plan B is shooting a windshield that is against a green screen at the angles you need and using those for your composites - but you really shouldn’t even consider this!

I won’t suggest to do it real because the principles are the same in the end (you still have to mess with it on the pc) other then that you would have to be shooting holes in glass and I can’t in good continence recommend that. I have all that would be needed to shoot holes in glass and I would honestly still just do it in post instead. It’s not Armageddon, city being blown away, type of CGI – Just a few holes.

These guys have gunshots; explosions and **** full res. DV you can download for free.

See if they have glass shots, I’m not sure – If not I bet they would love to get ya some! (Give them credit in the flick of course)

Good luck. :)

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Awesomeness Dak, I didn't realize they were free :D

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Ya- looks like these guys are having some pretty good fun over there 8)

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

I'm off to buy a green screen tommorow --- is it common for fabric stores to carry bright painfully green cloth?

Only in Lycra.

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Lycra is Dupont's spandex that stretches 5 times in length with full recovery to enhance fit and performance characteristics.
Supplex manages moisture and keeps its vibrant color, wash after wash.

--

This means its like not cloth, more like elastic that keeps its color through washing?

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

Oh, dude, I was only kidding. I sincerely hope no one makes chroma green lycra. Speedos are bad enough as they are.

As for the green screen material, people have had some success going to party stores and getting plastic tablecloths in colors close enough to the green or blue to work well.

Re: I guess I'll get us started,Bullet holes glass

chroma green/blue paper in rolls is dirt cheap. You can get (I think) around 5/6 feet wide and 50 feet long - Perfect color If you don't mind fighting with it a little.

EDIT: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/sss-54.html

Never bought from this company, just did a quick google search for an example - Lots of companies have this though.
