Jackman: Fountain Is 'Genius'
NEW YORK—Hugh Jackman told SCI FI that his upcoming SF movie The Fountain will surprise people. "I think that [The Fountain] is one of the most extraordinary things that I've ever seen," Jackman said in an interview here over the weekend while promoting his upcoming X-Men: The Last Stand. "I saw it, and I thought, 'Oh, man, I'm so glad to be in that.' It's like nothing you've ever seen. I can guarantee you that, and I think that [director] Darren [Aronofsky] is the modern-day Kubrick. I think that he is simply an artist and probably a genius. I think that you probably have to be [a] genius to really recognize that in someone else, and I'm not that, but I think that from [an] amateur viewpoint, he is a genius. He spent six years trying to get that film made, and what he has made is unbelievable. I was just listening to the soundtrack, and it's all like nothing you've ever seen before."
In The Fountain, Jackman plays a man at three points in time over 1,000 years. "It's essentially a love story," he said. "It's called The Fountain, which relates to the fountain of youth. It's about a man [Jackman] and a woman [Rachel Weisz] whose love story spans 1,000 years, and it's a psychedelic love story. That's how I'm going to explain it, but it's about a man who finds the fountain of youth."
The Australian actor will also appear soon in The Prestige, a period magic film from Batman Begins helmer Christopher Nolan, based on the Christopher Priest novel. In it, Jackman and Nolan's Batman star Christian Bale play rival magicians. "Chris Nolan is great," Jackman said. "Working with David Bowie was terrific, [as was working with] Michael Caine and Christian Bale and Scarlett [Johansson] again. It is about two magicians in the early 1900s who start off together, and, because of an event, they split off. They are very competitive, and it's about what lengths they will go to sabotage each other's lives and careers. So they try and almost kill each other by sabotaging each other's acts. There are a lot of twists and turns, a la [Nolan's] Memento." The Prestige will be released on Oct. 27. The Fountain has no release date yet, but will likely open the same month
i'm so hyped about these movies
