How to get avi files from DVD?

This may be the most obvious question. Forgive me if it is.

I'll be doing an actors demo reel soon and I'll need to rip a couple of scenes from a DVD. HOW??
I already have a decrypter (I truly don't use it illegally).
I've been trying to rip stuff just from my home movies that I've burned to DVD and I can't figure out how to rip avi files from even that non-copyrighted stuff. How do you guys do it?

Are there shareware or freeware aps for this?
Thanks.

There are no AVI files on movie DVDs. The video is encoded in MPEG-2 and the sound is encoded in AC-3, separately.

And unless you're dealing with copyprotected media, you can simply grab the vob file and drop it on the Vegas timeline. If the audio is AC3, you'll need a converter.
that's one you'll have to figure out on your own.

OK, legality aside (I'll assume you have the right to copy the material). DVDDecrypter is an excellent program for pulling VOBs off of a dvd. Look in the folder that DVDDecrypter saved the files in and you'll see a VIDEO_TS folder. Rename the .VOB files in this folder to .MPG and you can drop them right on the Vegas timeline. The problem is that, as David Jimmerson said, the audio is a separate track that Vegas can't read. I would use a program like GoldWave to convert the AC3 to WAV or MP3. Open the VOB (or mpg, if you've already renamed it) with Goldwave and save it in the format you want. If there is no audio in the VOB file, then it would be encoded into separate files in the AUDIO_TS folder and I can't help you there. I've never encoded those before. Here are the links:

Good Luck!
