How to find a directing job before you get an agent

So my projects are in editing, very close to picture lock. I've been on the edge of my feet since, wanting to direct other things.

So how do you do it?

I am not ready to direct a feature yet, since my reel is unfinished without these other projects complete. So I don't have much to pitch to investors. While I am a writer, I don't really consider myself a writer-director. I would like direct material that actually has structure -- not these one man shooting teams that go up on youtube and don't actually go anywhere. I'm talking shorts, commercials and music videos that have somewhat of a budget to accommodate a 13-20 production crew.

I'm just not sure where to go and find these things. So far I've directed a one-hour pilot and an 8 episode web series. But I'm ready to direct again.

Before you guys got steady work or work through an agent, how did you find directing gigs?

My first couple of directing gigs came from scripts that I wrote. It works for me personally because I feel more attached to a story if I have written it. I will admit that I am not the best director (my strong suit is cinematography), however I feel that when you have written something you should see it to completion. See if you can find a good script and get it on Kickstarter. Obviously you won't get a lot of money out of it, but you'll get some and hopefully enough to fund the project (as long as your keep your budget within reason). Good luck!
