I have used every single one of these in the past and am now settling down with Vegas. I really liked FCP on the mac, but Premier is a joke and the new pro version is just a rip off of Vegas.
Avid is what most pro's use, but depending no the setup can cost you as much as your House.

I find FCP on Jaguar runs great...you can also do tons with After Effects for titling, Maya for minor effects (smoke, clouds, etc.), not to mention color correct it without much hassle.
you did ask for a system and not just the editing package
this forum is really cool so far. can't wait to see where it goes.

Yes I guess it would help to know which platform you are gonna be using.
On Mac, FCP is pretty much King poop and is on par with Avid mostly.
On PC, your got alot of options, alot of power, and save a whack of dough to spend on camera stuff. Vegas seems to be popular recently.
The G5 should help close the gap for speed, but price will be high of course.

I've used Vegas, the 24P rocks but the interface and RT performance is lacking IMHO. I'd stick to my AVID XpressDV for most long edits. XpressDV has very crappy compositing features though. The new Premier Pro looks very promising and I'm very excited to try that out. If it's stable and no longer sluggish as is currently, it could be the new NLE to beat with good 3rd party support. You might also want to look up Pinnacle Edition 5. Its got a sleek-customizable interface, supposedly awsome RT performance w/ Background rendering.

Vegas is my tool of choice. I went from Premier to Avid Xpress to Vegas Video.
If you throw Vegas at a hi-Performance computer RT is no problem at all. It does take a single pass sometimes with lots of effects (just like premier does) to get it smooth.

have you let it run through once? I find that you are right, at first play it slows down, but second pass its pretty good. I guess that doesnt really count as Realtime though.

I'm currently using Vegas 4 - very happy with it and can't wait to try my new AGDVX with it - getting it tomorrow. I used Premiere and Pinnacle before Vegas and neither compares IMHO. Am curious to try Premiere 7 but will probably prefer Vegas for compositing in program and interface simplicity alone. Besides - Vegas has never crashed on me.

My personal oppinion, I can't stand Vegas. I like FCP... tons of options. Like any app it has it's problems, but it's the app for me. ;D
Don't really like the set-up of Avid. Premiere was great to learn, but it seems useless now.

Far as I'm concerned, you need to be cutting on a Mac. I've loved PCs for a long time, but now that I'm using my computer primarily for work, I could never go back. I won't get into it with anyone, this seems to be a pc-dominated forum, but I'd say you need to be cutting on a mac.
So for me, that eliminates Vegas and Premiere, so you're left with Final Cut and Avid XDV/Pro. Tough call, to be sure. I adore Avid, but I've got to say, the best choice right now is Final Cut Pro 4. As a total package, it can't be beat. With Soundtrack, Compressor, and all of the great features of FCP (color correction, 24p support, etcetc), you can't beat it, especially for the price. If money's no object, XPress Pro Powerpack with the Mojo box would be ideal, but otherwise, FCP is the best choice to make.

If you are using a Mac FCP is the way to go now... its becoming like Vegas VS. Premier for the PC.

I work with a Matrox RTX-100 Extreme realtime editing card with Adobe Premiere 6.5. I find that I cannot live without all those realtime features. Unfortunately, I cannot do 24p with it, but this may change in the future.

Blade is the way to go. It has unlimited layers of video and audio, a great interface and a built in audio offset to ensure sync during capture. Also the system has been optimized for the DVX-100. I more or less had to migrate onto the In-Sync platform last year when I was doing a Hi Definition program and the on-line house was using HDBOXX with In-sync Speedrazor as the interface. I had been using FAST electronics Video Machine since 1995 and was concerned with losing fine cut info in the EDL translation to the on-line facility. So I bought BLADE (the DV version of Speedrazor) and had the post house dub the HD footage to Beta SP for my offline edit. The project file opened on their system and we did basically a "conforming" job. But enough already... PC versus Mac... I decided years ago that I was having to deal with the corporate world which is overwhelmingly PC based... I mean you're going to be sending them scripts for approval on Microsoft Word (because it's what they have) and you're going to send them bills and budgets and statements on Microsoft Excell (because it's what they have). Beyond the interface.. photoshop is still photoshop... I don't care or even want to know about what's going on underneath.. it's enough for me to know how to work the interface... Also the peripherals and choices are so much cheaper and more prolific than with the esoteric "creative community" box the mac.
