Exporting Subtitles from DVD for editing

Hello all,

I was wondering if you could be of some help.

I'm trying to edit a short piece originated from a DVD file, in terms of video, I can edit the VOB file directly, now...can one think of a way to incorporate the subtitles found on the DVD in my timeline, say in a title/video track in a synchronized manner?

Or is it possible maybe to convert the VOB mpeg-2 file to another format (i.e DV, HDV m2p) and have the subtitles embedded in the video?

Thank you all...

SubRip can extract subtitles from VOB files, but not directly. Problem is that subtitles in VOB are actually bitmaps (transparent pictures overlayed on MPEG2 video) and SubRip "learns" these to make separate subtitle file, .srt or .sub if I remember correctly.
There is a program that can extract sutitle bitmaps from VOB (can't remember name) but these are not syncronized, just bitmap files with different numbers.
DV, HDV or .m2v can't hold subtitles, you must use separate title track to "burn" subs to your video permanently like usual titles.

Sort of a follow up,

I edited the movie, exported in .m2p and then opened the video using Media Subtitler, a free program I found on DivxLand.org, it uses windows media player so it supports all codecs found on windows that are usable by wmp, It's great for timing and writing subtitles (which I did from scratch) it can also open and save in any subtitle format found on all DVD authoring programs (even the MAC ones).

I used Encore DVD to author the DVD and insert the subtitles.

Cheers.
