DVD Studio Pro Subtitling

I need to do subtitling in Apple DVD Studio Pro - and I have been playing with their subtitling feature, which is tedious at best.

Anybody have any suggestions to good MAC based subtitlings tools that I can use and then import into DVD SP as a subtitle track ?

I tried to use the Edit application and write in the STL format and importing into DVD SP using the file import, but often I make mistakes in the syntax or time codes ... !!!!

Any help appreciated

Re: DVD Studio Pro Subtitling

I don't think there's anyway to avoid tedium with subtitles, it comes with the territory... just gotta keep on trucking... a good idea is to have a piece of paper, watch the movie slowly and write down manually each time code you need for the subtitle to appear... then you can copy this down into the STL and you should be good to go... it's long and tedious, but there really isn't a better way...

Re: DVD Studio Pro Subtitling

I'd like to echo what THiN said, it is very tedious. I suggest breaking it up into sections, do five scenes a sitting. Because it does get very boring, and you get the feeling like you just want to say screw it.

How I rate them !!!

How I rate them !!!

Okay - downloaded a couple of tools and did some testing.

Here is my personal opinion:

(1) Belle-Nuit (http://www.belle-nuit.com)
   - many features (+)
   - supports many platforms and formats (+)
   - viewer (+)
   - many features for fonts, sizes etc (+)
   - functions like DVD Studio Pro, one title at a time, not document centric (-)
   - not an intuitive Apple interface (-)
   - not that easy to use for the uninitiated user (-)
   - no support for SCC (-) ?
   - single license $120 (-)

(2) STLEdit (http://software.guishen.com)
   - document centric editor (unlike DVDSP & belle-nuit) (+) ... YES,  I LIKE IT ;D
   - looks and feels like an Apple application (+)
   - easy to use for the uninitiated user (+)
   - nice import and merge function (+)
   - struggling film maker license ($25) and established film maker license ($75) (+)
   - QT viewer to support document centric viewer (+)
   - written specifically for DVDSP & STL formatting  (-/+)
   - supports STL format for DVDSP (-/+)
   - not so many features as other tool (-/+)
   - support for SCC in next release (-/+)

The reason I rated some of the STLEdit features as (-/+) is because for me these are really (+) [this is what I am looking for] - where as others might not appreciate or have the same requirements. I have been told that it will support SCC export feature in next release - which in my book is another plus !

I ended up using the STLEdit much more (mainly because of the document centric view) , so I am already biased towards it ... I did not mean to misrepresent the other tool (which I believe is great) - but for my DVD SP, STL, SCC needs, STLEdit suits me the best !

Thanks for the feedback and help

Re: DVD Studio Pro Subtitling

If you have access to a PC (c'mon it's not too hard to find one), here is the software I prefer to any above mentioned ones. It's called "subtitle workshop" and is available FOR FREE from
www.urusoft.net
You can't beet it. and it exports in STL Format so you can always fine tune it in DVD Studio pro if you need to. But chances are, you won't have to.

they could not pay enough

they could not pay enough

Free - sorry - that is not enough reason for me to work on a PC ! I am sure the product is great - but 10 wild horses could not convince me to work on a PC for any reason !

That is just me and I feel very strongly about that - something to do with ethics and belief in quality over quantity !

Let's not start another "Great PC vs. Mac Debate" here
Mac's are crap, by the way ;D

Just kidding.

That urusoft program is amazing... it's exactly what you need to help you make subtitles...
