Crash when nesting my timelines (projects)

The title says it all. I have a movie.... something like... 50 minutes to an hour. It's all divided up into different projects or timelines, whatever you want to call them. I try to import them all into one master project but Vegas crashes. It just says something about a memory error, doesn't specify anything else ( no message saying something like.. ."Memory error ffffffff903272f eafeuwbgrpbf38) or whatever... I click on the details button and there are no details.

I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone know of a known problem with Vegas, Windows, etc screwing up because a project is too big? 50 Minutes isn't really that large but who knows...

Also, I'm thinking maybe it might be an issue with certain file types? I'm just guessing anything at this point. I have very high resolution jpeg images in my timeline for still photograph shots, etc. These were taken with a Canon Rebel something camera... but rendered in the timeline and Vegas brought them down to standard def. I also have some mp3 files as well. And WMA files.
I really have no idea why it's crashing so I was just wondering if someone might be able to shed some light on the subject.

Here is some more info:

Specs:
-Athlon 64 x2 4400+
-2 Gigs of Crucial RAM (A Dual Channel DDR kit I bought from New Egg)
-Video is stored on 2 250GB Western Digital Drives RAIDED (yes, they are the same model). These drives are connected to a PCI RAID Controller.
-Raptor Drive for my OS and Programs (no video is on this drive)

I dunno if this will help but any ideas, insight would be appreciated. I'm pretty much done with this movie, I just can't piece it together now so, again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and the 500GB is down to 5.65 GB or so... so I can't defrag the drive as it is...I'll have to move some files to my Lacie. But when I analyze this drive, it says it does not need to be defragged. Should I believe that?

I'm sorry if I'm repeating this topic but I searched and didnt come up with anything similar.

Thanks a ton,
Paul DV

First, you've got a pretty smokin' system it sounds like ... other than when you say your HD is down to 5.65GB it sounds like you're saying it's 99% full, which I'm thinking could be your problem.

Otherwise, I had a similar issue under Vegas 5 last year when working with a TON of high resolution TIFF's ... I just learned to save OFTEN as it was pretty unstable with the amount of high res images I was trying to work with. Sorry, not the answer you need to hear, just saying I can feel your pain to a degree.

However, in your situation it sounds as if you can't piece them together at all? Perhaps just nest a couple at a time & render out uncompressed AVI files, then import the uncompressed AVI files into a master timeline & render from there. It would at least be a work around for now.

So far I've been able to import all of them except this 15 minute project. It gets weird here... See... I can import all of them except the 15 minute project (which is the middle of the movie). BUT, if I import the 15 minute one first, I can import maybe 2 more projects, then after that I get the same error. That's why I'm assuming there's some kinda of limit it's hitting and then crapping out. I'm not really sure though because I figured Vegas would be able to handle a full project like this. I'm not sure what else to do. I thought about your suggestion, but I dont want to lose a generation. I could render out uncompressed but I'd rather not. I'm not really sure if I'd lose any quality that way or not but if so, I'd really rather not lose the quality. I guess a temp fix ( I havent tried it cuz I'm currently backing up my video drive) would be to import all of the projects, then cut and paste the 15 minute project into this master project... Strange work around that I shouldn't have to do but it's worth a try....
Thanks for the help though. It does suck cuz I'm like... 90% done with this project and I REALLY just want to finish it because EVERYONE is bugging me to see it...
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

PS - Envision... thanks for the tips on doing that strange movement from The Ring. It came out great!

Oh, you used THAT in your film? Now I want to see your film too!! Hurry up & get it done already!!

First, if you render out to uncompressed you'll have the least if any "Generation" lost. Besides, once you bring that uncompressed file back into Vegas, if you're just rendering out the AVI's together without doing anything to the files (i.e. adding any elements, CC, etc.) and they're just straight cuts at that point, you'll have ZERO loss. So you'll be good to go.

While Vegas CAN nest projects, I've always found it just a tad clunky when working with nested projects (ESPECIALLY if I've got motion blur, super sampling, 3D track motion, etc. going on with it - then it gets REAL clunky when trying to work through that stuff) ... so I tend to avoid it whenever possible. Myself, I'll just open up another instance of Vegas, and then cut & paste what I want from one project over to the other.

If that 15 minute project is the thing that's crashing Vegas, then render it out to an uncompressed AVI, and bring it back into your master project that has all the imported/nested timelines. One note: If you're project is widescreen, and you render out uncompressed AVI, then when you bring it back in to a widescreen project that file won't look right until you right click on it, then select properties and set the ratio from the default of 1.0 that it's at and change it to the 1.2121

Cool.. I'll try that... Or the cut and paste thing... yeah.... my project is widescreen. I "squeezed" it in Vegas... That's going to be shitty if I have to make a video copy considering I chose "No" to "Maintain aspect ratio" for EVERY single video event.... yikes... but anyways... i'll try that and see what happens... I already did my color correction on it and whatever else so after I render it out (if I go that route), I wont be playing with the color, framing, etc... so hopefully there wont be any loss or VERY little.. because I'm already losing resolution from "squeezing" it in post to make it 16:9.
Thanks and I'll let you know when it's done!

You'll only have to worry about changing the properties option once when you bring the larger AVI(s) back into a widescreen project ... it'll automatically center, etc. ... just properly stretches it back out to the correct aspect ratio (perhaps stretch is a poor term, but it'll look correct afterwards).

First, aare you using Vegas 6c? Or earlier builds? There were nesting issues in Vegas 6, and 6a.
Second, the full drive is a likely culprit. Also check your temp folder. Remember that for nesting, Vegas has to render a proxy file and if the drive is fragged, or if you don't have enough space, or if you've got a slow bottleneck in there, it can easily cause a crash in the process of creating those sfap0 files.

Spot

Spot

You know what Spot... I'm guessing that I dont have enough room to render those sfap0 files... I'll try moving some files to another drive to clear up room, then defragging. Then I'll try to piece it all together. By the way... your book on Vegas 6 is awesome. I learned a lot from it... mostly in the audio mixing section because I knew nothing about audio. Great work and thanks for writing that book.
Oh and as far as the version I'm using... I believe I am using 6C but I just reformatted my main hard drive and I can't remember if I re-downloaded 6C... I'll take a look when I get home.... wow I can't believe i dont remember that....
Thanks for the help!

Importing Projects

Importing Projects

Does importing a project into another project work if the project you are importing has a video track with a blending mode? I have a video track with the blending mode "BURN" and this is the only thing I can see that's different from my other projects. Anyone have any idea? It crashes every time I import that project.
Thanks,
Paul DV

Actually

Actually

Nevermind... I tried to import that one in a new project and it works. Thing is, I have about 9 projects I have to import and no matter what the last one is... it won't import. Vegas crashes. I'm not sure what's going on.... :undecided
If anyone has an advice, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!

Have you taken care of that 99% full HD yet? Instead of wasting time with the crashes, I'd go the uncompressed AVI route, myself.

Yep

Yep

Yep, I moved everything to my Lacie drive so I have 250GB or so free on the project drive. I figured out a workaround. I just Did the cut and paste routine for the ones that were giving me problems. Oh well... but at least it works. That's all that matters... My project is 57 minutes.. damn... only 13 more minutes to be considered a feature film... oh well... hahaha... thanks for your help!
