best way to rip VOB to something editable

SOS,

I am making a bonus dvd disc for an artist at the management company i work for.

part of it will be a music video section and the record label has supplied me with all artist music videos on a single DVD.

I need to get them from that DVD into the DVD i am authoring WITHOUT significant generation or re-encoding loss.

is there a program that will extract to a MPEG-2 file?

or if there is a better way...please let me know!

(i work on mac only fyi)

THANKS,

You're always going to have a generation loss when ripping mpeg-2 ..editing..then re-encoding as mpeg-2.

However if its only done once or twice it wont be noticible.

Your best bet, is if it was recorded on DV cameras you could hook up a DV camera to the dvd player and record it to the tape, then import. However DVD is 4:2:1 and DV is 3:2:0 So there will be some quality loss.

However if your source is from DV anyway, it wont matter. If it was originally shot on HDCAM or something nicer (like DVCPRO50) then you might want to look into converting the vob file on the mac (which can be hard, but give handbrake a try)

Are you talking about color space?

NTSC DV is 4:1:1. PAL DV is 4:2:0. MPEG-2 for DVD is 4:2:0.

on a Mac i use Mac the Ripper to extract the VOB file. then use MPEG Streamclip to demux the VOB into an M2V and an AIF (or AC3) which can be brought into a new project in DVD Studio Pro without a noticeable loss in compression.

MPEG Streamclip will also let you convert the VOB file to a format that can be brought into an NLE of your choosing for editing - DVCAM, uncompressed, etc.

I did some research. Instant HandBrake easily converts DVD's to h264. Maybe that will help. It's free, also.

Solution

I found my solution.

I just contacted the label requesting masters on BETA SP. Then I got a great company to encode the beta sp's to high quality mpeg-2 files ready for dvd authoring.
(dvdtransfer.com) they do great work and have fast turn around time!

thanks for all your input!
