Beginner - How do I insert different video files to a track?

Hope all is well:

I am trying to put 2 different files on the same track, one underneath the other.
I have never been able to do this. I go to Media Pool and find the file I want, right click it and select; it comes up in the media bin and on the track/timeline; then I go back to Media Pool and find the other file and do the same; but when I do, it overrides the previous one and will be the only file/clip in the media bin and on the timeline/track.

How do you add different video files/clips to a track?

Another thing I tried is: I right click on the track section and select insert video track, and a track is created (which is what the sorry Vegas manuals say do) but no file/clip selection appears for me upload, or drag and paste to the track.

What am I doing wrong? I have 2 files saved separatly under the same folder and am trying to load both to track 1 and track 2 so I can see both and cut/paste edit the footage down to one file.

Thanks for helping me.

Drag and drop them to the place on the timeline where you want them to be. Left-click for less complication.

Just drag and drop your video files where you want them. If you double click on your file in the media pool it will be placed on the timeline starting at where you have your edit line. What was probably happening to you is that when you clicked on your file it was being placed on top of the existing clip on the time line because your edit line was at the beginning of that clip. Another thing that I would recommend to beginners is to shut off the "auto ripple" until you get the hang of the time line. It is a useful tool but can be problematic to a beginner when trying to manipulate clips on the timeline. That would be your third button from the left on the tool bar.

Hope this helps.

Are you trying to do multi-cam editing? If yes, check out Vol 1 #9 of my newsletters which shows four different methods of doing that. To make life easier, also check out Excalibur and Ultimate S which makes multi-cam editing MUCH easier.

What I'm trying to do is:

1) I shot a short film with 2 dv cameras, same story, several scenes

(resulting in two dv tapes with footage)

2) I loaded the footage of both tapes of to my computer/Sony Vegas

(resulting in two separate files)

3) Now I need to piece/inter-cut the scenes from each tape together, so it will

make one complete short film.

I have the impression that that best way to do this, whereas I can see the images/footage of both files is to put them both on the timeline, one under the other; then I can edit from there, moving the scenes and putting them in their scripted positions.

Then, as I've been learning the process, after I managed to get both files onto the timeline, one under the other, I noticed that when I played one file (track 1 & 2), track 3 & 4 played as well; then I muted 3 & 4 and that fixed that. Now I'm going to have to figure out how to move the scenes/piece this thing together. I know that I can do it on the time line, where I just move/slide the footage right or left, or cut/paste; this has lead me to feel this is not the right way to do it.

Now I'm thinking (which I will need to play around with and research), I do not need to drag the whole files to the time first; first I need to edit the file seperately, whereas I find a scene I want to keep, delete all the junk start point and end points, then save that scene under a file name. I should do this for all my scenes, then I can just import them to the timeline, lining them up on track 1 & 2, one right behind the other, then I can add in effect, other clips, extra stuff.

What is your suggestion on doing it this way?

Sounds like you have to big files that need to be cut and ordered/reordered.
'S' will split.

Make sure you have to correct file selected or 'S' will split across all files on the timeline at the cursor.

that should get you started - anyway, play around with it.
good luck.

I find cutting and editing on the timeline easier but some use the "trimmer" to trim their clips first. What I do is basically what you did, put both large clips on the timeline 1&2 and 3&4 but I also open up a third timeline for the edited clips. Just scrub the edit line over the clips that you want and hit "s" where you want to cut the clip. Then just take the cut clip and drag it to the empty timeline. Do this with all your edits. Take the advice above and also I can't stress this enough, turn off "auto ripple". There is also "grouping" and "ungrouping" clips when you want to edit sound or video seperately. Vegas is capible of just about anything.. it will come with time. Once you get over the curve you'll love it.
