Audition

I just watched this film last night, and I must say that the film is really weird. I didn't undestand what was going on.
She was a psycho, but what's with the dreams? Why was he having those weird dreams? Was it some sort of spirit that was enlightning him?

I just thought it was weird. Has anyone watched this film? What did you think of it?

All the best

Re: Audition

Great film.

Miike says in the commentary that the reality is when Asami is torturing Aoyama and that she really is a psycho. So, alot of people tend to think the torture scene is real. But one thing I think people miss is that in the commentary, Miike says it's Aoyama's reality, not reality as a whole. Listen to the exact words he uses. Sure, it could be a mistake in the translation, but I highly doubt it since translation methods are much more extensive than they used to be. So from that, if it is Aoyama's reality, it may be a reality he has built up in his mind, some fabrication of his mind playing and replaying events as they would in this reality. They are not necessarily the way things have actually happened.

Well anyway It can be interperted in many ways...
Takashi Miike's interpretation is that he's being tortured in reality and the hotel is a dream.

It can be seen either way. Either he really did dream up the whole torture sequence, or Takashi Miike is just messing with our minds. You know when in a movie something horrible happens and then the character wakes up, "Thank God, it was all a dream!"? It could be a pastiche of that; bearing in mind that Miike loves playing with cliches and conventions (see the ending for DOA, most of Happiness Of The Katakuris (which switches genre almost by the minute), etc.)

There are many hints pointing either way, and I think that's deliberate. If you want to believe the torture sequence and pretty much everything since the hotel was real, then there are enough hints for you to do so. If you reckon Aoyama imagined it, likewise. The movie never tells you "This is how it is!". It simply says, "You are all intelligent people and can make up your own minds from this." I like that. A Hollywood film would never treat its audience with that kind of respect.

The music Asami's stepdad is playing on the piano is the same music as in the advert for the audition (you know, the one goes "Want to be a heroine etc"). So I personally am starting to veer towards the idea that final third of the movie does take place in Aoyama's head.)

there are so many points on this we can go on and on.

anyway watch the film if you haven't and I'm praying hollywood doesn't make a remake, hollywood should study the word "originality".

Re: Audition

Well, at first I thought that the real thing was when she was torturing, but then the dream made me think that he was dreaming, which was cool. It made think wow, that was going on in his mind. That was great. What a twist. But when the film goes back to the torture scene and ends with his son calling the cops, I assumed that that was what really happened, but didn't quite get how that happened.

Anyway, It was very weird, I must say.
