A Very Long Engagement

I just saw it last night. A Very well told story, a beautifully constructed film bearing many similarities to the director's of previous Amelie, although the end mood of the film is considerably richer and deeper. The photography is great and the actors first rate. Absolutely no glamour in the battle scenes, the director takes us right into the cold, wet misery of trench warfare. Yet this film is full of hope and leaves you feeling that everyone should be loved that much at least once in a lifetime.

One wonder, when the remarkable Jodie Foster was pressed into service as a Frenchwoman, but it is good to see her again on screen after a longtime without seeing her.

if you liked Amelie, go see this one to go back in the mood. Probably not a classic, but a very well made film.

Re: A Very Long Engagement

Glad to hear you like it. Hopefully it will come around my part of the town soon enough. I love Audrey Tautou.

Re: A Very Long Engagement

If you love Audrey Tautou, you will love her for ever after this one. :)

Re: A Very Long Engagement

just got back from seeing this. i liked it a lot. cinematography was amazing. reminded me of cold mountain, although this was much much better.

Re: A Very Long Engagement

This movie was ****ing TERRIBLE. it should be called "A Very Long Movie" or better yet "A Very Big Waste Of Money." The movie could have been a slideshow of nicely framed color corrected shots, with no subtitles because THERE WAS SO ORIGINAL STORY. A boyfriend goes to war and the girl wonders if he's still alive. Wow. Let's drag that on for 2 and a half hours. Every 30 minutes we're driven down a new path thats not suspensful and wastes half an hour to conclude what we've known all along...HE MIGHT STILL BE ALIVE!!! And the end sucked. Atleast if i waited 2 and a half hours to find it out, maybe he could have a heart attack, and then mysteriously revive only to be gunned down by robotical radio controlled fighter jets from the future, and then get sucked into a wormhole, finding out life has no meaning and the universe starts over. That would kick ass. This goes to show how far you can go with great techniques and a lot of money, but a shitty cliched story, and being pretentiously drunk off your great movie Amelie. What happened here?!

Re: A Very Long Engagement

i'm looking forward on seeing this. already bought amelie & city of lost children.

now i still need delicatessen, haven't seen that one either

Re: A Very Long Engagement

You have to see Delicatessen, very nice one.

Part of a review by Matt Ford:

"Combining the cruel humour of Grimm's fairy stories, with the spirit of Terry Gilliam and that peculiarly French knack of putting magic into film, this feverish tale of star-crossed lovers and small town cannibalism has endured as a true masterpiece of the fantastique. With "Delicatessen", Jeunet and Caro gave the world a canny and confident calling card for that most coveted of talents - commercial arthouse cinema. Brilliant."

Great DVD

Great DVD

I just got this dvd WOW! Great visuals and the behind th scenes is perhaps one of the longest and best I've ever seen. Kudos to Jean-Pierre Jeunet for another stylish movie. Two thumbs way way up for this beutiful movie and especially for the dvd special features. BUY BUY BUY.

I highly recommend the DVD for the behind the scenes featurette just so you can see the crane down straight to steadycam shot.
The movie itself is okay. Nothing special. It's enjoyable. The cinematography is nothing special either, just some fancy color correction. Looks good tho, but nothing to rave about.
It's a good one, if you just want to relax with your lady.

I liked this movie. Didn't love it, but liked it. I'll watch anything with Audrey Tatou, and the photography was beautiful.

I should mention that even the behind the scenes Doc is subtitled. Great behind the scenes though.
