This movie started out badly. Really badly. In fact, I had nearly given up on it halfway through. Ridley Scott has absolutely no sense of comedy whatsoever. Russel Crowe seemed equally as confused when forced to deliver a funny line. There were a few awkward scenes, such as when Russel Crowe gets stuck in an empty pool and must find a way out, or when Russel Crowe is forced to drive a mini French car (didn't they already do that in an Ashton Kutcher movie??) that were just... oddly paced, oddly scored, and just plain not funny. Luckily, somewhere around the middle of the film, Ridley Scott realized he wasn't a comedy director and focused more on the drama and romance. Once he did that, everybody in the film looked a lot more comfortable.
The cinematography was, of course, gorgeous. The house was amazing. I mean it was impossible to not want to live there. And the most surprising thing was how well the movie wrapped up. There were quite a few little twists and turns that you weren't expecting, and it really won me over.
Don't expect greatness. But if you're trying to earn points with your girlfriend/wife, check this one out.
oh, before I forget. The funniest part of the DVD though, is that for some odd reason Russel Crowe's band has three videos on it. They're terrible! This guy doesn't have enough, being one of the top leading men in Hollwood. He has to now be a rock star (which I can assure you - we will never have to worry about). I can smell the deal for this movie going down... "Okay, but this is the dealbreaker. I'm only doing it if I can put three of my videos on the DVD". Bizarre I tell you. Bizarre.
