HMIs are daylight balanced, and are typically used outdoors. AadynTech has some very nice, high power LED lights that I've used outdoors as well. They require a lot less power than tungsten and HMI lights.

I've used both of these lights for a couple location TV shoots, one at Sundance and one on Hollywood Blvd. They are pretty fantastic, but I second the weight issue on the Eco Punch. Muscling them onto a hi-hi roller isn't fun. But for the output and current draw, they can't be beat.

Yes, or use matching temp bulbs in the reverse, just change them out for softness.

I would say use the Edison bulbs as practicals for shots where you'll see them, but swap them out for softer bulbs (maybe CFLs) when you're shooting through the mirror.
