I'm shooting ski action and need a tripod that works well for following skiers. The stuff I've shot is jerky and I'm sure user error is a part of it. How do I get smooth off-angle pans in the cold (on a budget) or is that possible?

In Aspen for X-Games, overcast, lightly snowing and flat light. What settings and filters are recommended. I've got diagonal lines where white should be. Total neophyte, first post, waiting for the book to arrive, any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Gavin
