Thorlabs and Wax GG

Has anyone ever used a thorlabs tube and able to get a wax gg inside? I was looking at Oscars thread and makes wax. But he uses filter rings for making his glass. Any suggestions would be great.

49mm UV filters, with the ring on, fit snugly inside ThorLabs 2" dia. tubing.

So, using Oscar's method, use a 49mm filter with the ring on, and your smaller dia. glass with the foil spacers should be 46mm.

I use and rec' Hoya brand UV Haze filters (uncoated). They're relatively cheap and always ship with a retainer ring that's easy to pop out.

It means I've done extensive testing with wax. I will say Oscar's method is the most repeatable and foolproof, but I've never gotten completely satisfactory results using it -- there's either no grain but a lot of light loss and soft focus, or there's minimal light loss, sharp focus details, but evident grain.

Also... the wax process is a real headache in other ways -- the thinner your spacers get, the more obvious things like stratification in the wax become. Dealing with heat and other variables is a lot to juggle.

I'm not sure you've noticed, but I'm the one who started the "Microcrystalline Wax Techniques?" thread over at dvinfo after seeing what the G35 could do. After over a year of experimentation, (that thread's dated Oct. 15th, 2004) I've given up trying to succeed with Oscar's method.

Your adapter is very sharp for a non-wax adapter. Can't wait to see the pro version in action...back to the other tread with this-->>

has anyone tried airbrushing many many layers of Acrylic medium ( like the painting medium) on a UV filter. cause it will become that perfect trandslucent texture eventually.

cause i know you can get mists so fine with a airbrush they arent visible, but do leave paint patterns so fıne you cant detect any "grain". this may give you a nearly grainless GG like effect.

mm i love that stuff.

not sure you can airbrush that, i think it will clog the needle. but something similar.
